As I am deep into retirement, I confess to doing more-than-occasional internet searches to find out what might be happening with people who made an impression on me earlier in my long life.  This is what made me inquire about Derek in June, 2024; and why my grief is immediate despite the 9-year’s late discovery of his passing.  I think back to when my wife and I first met him in the fall of 1979 at the McRae-Davis household in Newtown, CT; and despite him not yet reaching the age of 2, his eyes and broad smile were immediately and intently riveted on me.  On seeing my discomfited reaction, sibling Brian or Diana volunteered that “Derek likes MEN!”  We moved away from Connecticut in 1982, and would not see Derek again until 2010 when he and Amanda came to visit her parents (also our dear friends) in southern New Hampshire.  From that last meeting, it was evident that Derek liked PEOPLE; and radiated that same direct, smiling demeanor for everyone.  Reminiscences posted by others in recognition of his life and passing add testimony to that impression; and we know that his memory—and promise of reunion—will continue to bless the lives of his family.

Amanda and Family:  I became friends with Derek while watching our kids play soccer together behind the Rex Hospital and then Tae Kwon Do in Holly Springs.  Derek and I chatted often about sports and our kids and work.  I was deeply saddened to hear of your loss.  Derek is a great man and father and our prayers are with you during this difficult time!

We barely met, and yet we will miss you. We know how truly special you have been because we know your family. We can see you shine through in Kevin and in Jared, who we have the privilege to know. Kevin is a treasure, a leader, and a friend to many of the kids at Taekwondo. He has been a role model for my son and a pleasure for us to learn with, to grow with, and to learn from. Jared is quick to smile and quick to support others. We will miss getting to know you better. But we will continue to treasure knowing you through Kevin, Jared, and through your beautiful family.

Our hearts are simply broken for you Diana, and the entire Davis Family for this tremendous loss of Derek.  God will help get you all through this and know all our love and sympathy is here for you-

I will never forget the times Derek and I spent together in the computer science program at BYU. We laughed so much. He always had such fun ideas. Thank you for the good times. You will be missed.

Dear Sister Davis, even though I have never met your family, I am a member of the Church and pray for young families.  Your life has taken a different path than what you or your husband imagined.  My heart hurts for you and how I wish I could take some of your pain.  But I know Someone who did take all of your pain and His heart is hurting also.  We are never asked to go through anything that we cannot handle, that He will not help us to overcome.  It will be a slow process but one that will draw you and your children closer to the Lord.  Please remember on your hardest days that you are not alone.  I am so sorry for your loss of your husband and friend and father to your sons and daughters. Time will heal, in the meantime, grieve as it is a natural process and help your children too also.  We have wonderful gospel truths that can help us when tragedy happens but they don't always console us until we can get our bearings.  You are as Nephi, led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do.  God bless your little family and Brother Davis' family and friends.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Derek's passing. Derek and I were friends and teammates at SAS. We have worked together in many projects. He was a very smart, kind, and always there to help type of person. Our office will never be the same without him. Please accept my deepest condolences. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family. May God give you the comfort, strength and peace and may he rest in peace.

Derek you are missed. Thank you for your friendship and being such a positive force in my and others lives.  My thoughts are prayers are with and for Amanda, Alyssa, Jenna, Jared, and Kevin.

My heartfelt condolences to Amanda, children and the entire family.  I have had the pleasure of being Derek's Admin while he has been with SAS.  Derek always had a kind word and a smile on his face. My deepest condolences to Amanda, children and family members.  I had the honor of working with Derek during his studies in the graduate program at UVA.  He was the kindness student and always smiling.  May God wrap his arms around each of you during this difficult time.  Derek will always be thought of fondly.

I will always cherish the memory of running the Ogden half marathon with you and Derek many years ago. He made me laugh when he walked to the front and asked where the 4 minute mile pace group was. He was such a smart man, a good husband, and an excellent runner. I remember how proud he was of you that day (it was your very first half marathon). He just adored you and it showed. I always thought we'd meet up somewhere for some other Ragnar or half marathon along the way.  Now, not a morning run will go by that I won't be thinking of you two and your incredible love for each other. Sending love and prayers for you and your sweet children.

Derek and his family have been a blessing to my daughter, Sally Clark and son-in-law, Mark Clark. I am saddened by this event for all involved and pray for these families. Heavenly Father has a great son in his arms. Derek, you are missed and very loved.

Most of my memory with Derek is in sports training and eating snack. 
I am not very good at sports comparing to Derek.  One time, Derek and others are forming a team activity and need a 5th person to make a team, so I join this training team in SAS.  I always can't make my quota and left behind.  However, always got encourage from him in 5k, rowing, stepping, etc.  He always smile and runs like a machine.  In my mind, he is like a super-man: strong, kind and helping.  After seeing him coming back from previous leg surgery, I got confidence that this super-man will come back this time in no time.  He have proved to be that strong.
I like to eat snacks during break.  Sometimes, bump into Derek during the break.  I eat a lot and so is he!  One time, he even told me that I exercise a lot, and eat a lot because I want to be a strong person, so I can hold up my wife by my arms.  Derek loves his family a lot and thinking about them all the time.
I miss Derek and know that he is with the Lord.  May the Lord watch over his beautiful family.

I am so incredibly sad to have heard of Derek's passing. I will always cherish my memories with Derek as freshman roommates at college and driving across the country with him after our missions. Derek was one of the kindest and happiest people I have ever known. His smile was infectious and he was the type of person that made you want to be a better person just by being around them. Amanda, my prayers are with you and your family. I am so sorry.

Derek and his family lived across the street from us, we moved last summer from Holly Springs.  Derek was one of those people that always had a smile on his face, always asked what he could do to help, he was always outside working in yard &/or playing with his wife and children, beautiful piano music came softly from their house in the early evening, they are just one of the families that you knew he was a wonderful husband and father!!  Our hearts are broken for Amanda and the children.  When we moved last summer, Derek was there asking what can I do to help, and he did, he took beds apart, loaded things in the truck and had a smile on his face the whole time. Derek and I has been next door at SAS for several years. We are team members and friends. We share laughter and life stories. We have found similar views on family and life. Derek is a great guy with such a warm personality that words can not describe. I couldn't hold my tears when I closed his office door for him. And I keep thinking about him whenever I am driving alone. In my Asian culture, we believe that two people meet in life because of "Yuan Fen", which is a special luck of getting to know each other among billions of people. This connection is from the previous and the current, and it will bring us together again in the next life. I am sure I will very happily say hi when that moment comes. If there is anything that my family can do for you, please let me know.

We are so sad about Derek's death and his family's loss. A tragedy that has no words and no explanation. Grief is the loneliest journey and yet must be shared by the family and community to endure it. Our prayers are with you in this terrible hour.

Please know that our love and prayers are being sent your way. May you be comforted in knowing you will be together again. The Lord must need Derek on the other side. We know he will serve the Lord well and prepare a way for his family. We love and miss your family here in the Rivanna Ward. If you need anything at any time, just let us know.
