Eric David Coates

Eric David Coates, 32, from Fayetteville, NC passed away peacefully in his home in Apex, NC surrounded by his loved ones on January 30, 2026, after a very courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on January 4, 1994, in Fayetteville where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Jack Britt High School in 2012. Eric was a long-time employee of Harris Teeter where he worked as the Meat Market Manager. He was well loved by his customers and co-workers. Eric was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman, and an excellent cook. He had a large personality and quick wit. One never knew what kind of “come back” he would have in any conversation, so he kept us on our toes. Eric trusted his life to God, so his family is comforted knowing he is in the loving arms of Jesus.

Eric is survived by his parents, Richard and Shelby Coates of Fayetteville. Brothers Steven, Richie, Woodie, and his sister Jennifer. Also left to cherish his memory are a host of nephews, a niece and a great niece and great nephew. His life partner, Jana Riddle, and his beloved cats Thor and Pikachu, and some very special close friends whom he considered family.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care Eric received from staff at the Basnight Cancer Center in Chapel Hill. His Oncologist, Dr. Jensen; his Nurse Navigator, Kristen; and his favorite nurses, Paige and Josh.

At Eric’s request there will not be a funeral service; however, his ashes will be scattered at Harris Lake in the future. People will be invited to attend when a date is known.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Support Program. This program supports patients, families and caregivers at the NC Basnight Cancer Hospital.
