

Erma Harcum Thompson born on March 2, 1917 died January 13, 2011 in Cary, North Carolina. Erma, born in South Hampton County, Virginia was the daughter of James Dossie and Mary Tidwell Harcum. She was the widow of Willis Earl (Kirk) Thompson who died in 1980. She is preceded in death by her four brothers and two sisters. Surviving are her son, Robert E. Thompson and wife Kathy of Ashland, Virginia, her daughter, Rebecca T. Chapman and husband Jack of Cary, N.C. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Jennifer P. Singh (Pravin), Amanda P. Bell (Tom), Matthew B. Thompson (Jennifer), and Christopher Y. Thompson and four great grandchildren, Colton and Bryce Bell and Micah and Penelope Rebecca Singh. There are also several nieces and nephews.
While she enjoyed attending Greenwood Forest Baptist Church for the past three years, Port Norfolk Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA was her church home for over 60 years. There she was a member of the Friends Bible Class, the WMU and the XYZ Senior Group. She was also a member of the Scottish Rites Ladies Auxiliary.
She was best known for her love of family, her quiet faith, her strong network of friends and her delicious country cooking. She will be dearly missed by all those that loved her.
A service of celebration will be held in the chapel of the Port Norfolk Baptist Church Monday, January 17 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the ongoing ministry of the Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Va. 23704.
