Born in Caswell County, NC, on October 15, 1932, Hazel was the cherished daughter of the late Goley and Bethel Stephens, and the sibling to Durwood Stephens. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Baswell Markham, with whom she shared a life of hard work and deep devotion as tobacco farmers—partners in every sense of the word.
A woman of quiet strength and deep faith, Hazel dedicated her life to nurturing others. Her love for children led her to many roles as a teacher and caregiver, and her kindness touched all who crossed her path. She found joy in the simple pleasures—sunshine, sandy beaches, blooming gardens, and the comfort of home.
Hazel was a gifted Southern cook, known especially for her famous fried chicken and her spotless kitchen—so clean, her family joked “you could eat off the floors.” Her hospitality was unmatched, and her home was a place where all felt welcomed and loved. A faithful churchgoer until her health no longer allowed, Hazel lived her faith daily, leading by example and instilling strong values in her family through love, discipline, and grace. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of resilience, humility, and unwavering devotion.
Hazel is survived by her devoted daughters, Marcia (Billy) Powell of New Hill, NC and Wyndy (Mike) Gillis of Charlotte, NC; and her treasured grandchildren, Justin Lawrence and Heather Lanning, who lovingly called her "Mama Hazel" and loving brother, Durwood (Ann) Stephens of Elkin, NC; and many extended family members and friends.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love, gratitude, and admiration. Hazel's life was a reflection of God’s love—steadfast, generous, and full of grace.
