

Reverend John Childress Goss, age 89, passed away on March 10, 2016 and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He died surrounded by his family at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. John had been in declining health for the past year.
John was born in Durham, NC on April 18, 1926. He attended Durham City Schools and served honorably in the US Navy for six years. He worked for many years for Dixon Flooring Company and the Durham Housing Authority. John was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church in Durham. The Lord then led him into the ministry beginning with a radio ministry at WTIK in Durham and then transitioning to pastor various Free Will Baptist Churches in Cary, NC, Plymouth, NC, Andrew SC and Siler City, NC. John was a Home Missionary Pastor and former member of the National Association of Free Will Baptist of Nashville, TN for many years. John was a hard working pastor and was a shepherd to his flock. He taught high standards and taught his people to love others and respect God's house. In retirement, he was employed at South Hills Mall for over 19 years. John was a talented gardner and wood craftsman. He was a current member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in the Friendship Community of Apex.
He was the son of the late William and Velma Goss. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill and Harold and sisters, Lillian Ashley, Peggy Forsythe and Linda Currin.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elsie Foy Ray Goss of New Hill, NC; four children, John Goss, Jr. of New Hill, Connie Goss Taylor (Alan) of New Hill, Phillip Goss (Wanda) of Fuquay Varina, Phyllis Goss Baker (Kenneth) of Fuquay Varina; seven grandchildren, Allyson Vaskey (Cole) of Suffolk, VA, Timothy Taylor (Traci) of Cary, NC, Brittany and Brandon Goss of Fuquay Varina, Kenneth, Andrew and Samuel Baker all of Fuquay Varina; and great grandchildren, Everly, Caden, Savannah Vaskey and Aiden Goss; brother, Larry Goss of Graham, NC.
A funeral service will be held 3pm Sunday, March 13, 2016 at Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St, Apex, NC 27502. Burial will follow the service at Apex Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1:00-3:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
