Joy Martin Yates

She was born on May 4,1943, in Wake County to the late Robert Martin Sr. and Myrtle Wiggs Martin. She was proceeded in death by her devoted husband Olive Wendell Yates Jr and her brother Robert “Bob” Martin Jr.

A graduate of Peace College, Mrs. Yates dedicated her career to early childhood education as a kindergarten teacher at Apex Baptist Church. Her devotion to the church extended beyond the classrooms.

She was an active member of the congregation and served with the Apex Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, affectionately known as the Firebelles.

Mrs. Yates found great joy in traveling and attending softball games alongside her late husband, Olive Wendell Yates Jr., cheering him on from the stands and playing card games with the other wives.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, David Wendell Yates and his wife Debbie of Denver, NC; her daughter, Kim Yates Wilkins and her husband Tim of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren Ian Wilkins and Tessa Wilkins of Raleigh, NC; Jennifer Gilbert and husband Derek of Wanchese, NC; and Brittany Owens of Wake Forest, NC. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Jordan Stokes, Haleigh Stokes, Finn Gilbert, and Colt Gilbert.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., followed by graveside services at 12:30 p.m. at Apex City Cemetery.

May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
