

Michael Darter Collins (Mike), 54, of Holly Springs, NC died Monday (January 31, 2022) after a recent illness. Mike grew up in Kingsport, TN and was always interested in how things work and are put together. Michael studied mechanical design, which allowed him to travel all over the world before settling down in Holly Springs, NC. He loved to read, garden, bird watch and spend time with his wife, Renae, and family. He also appreciated masterful movies, music, and works of art. He will be remembered as a humble, knowledgeable, witty man who was kind to everyone he met. Mike always had a story to share about a place where he'd been as well as scrapes that he’d managed to escape from.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Pauline Collins, brothers James (Jim) and Norman Collins. He is survived by his wife, Renae Collins, step-children, Travis Umphlette (Amanda Krick) and Dillon Umphlette (Elizabeth Villalta), grandchildren, Nathan Krick and Charleston Umphlette, who fondly referred to him as Mr. Mikey, sister, Jeanie Musson (Roger Musson), sisters-in-law, Miki Collins and Debbie Collins, as well as numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at Apex Funeral Home in Apex, NC on February 19th at 10 AM followed by a reception and visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Gideons International and the JDRF (Type1 Diabetes).
A second Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends near Mike's hometown of Kingsport, TN Saturday April 2, 2022.
Visitation from 2-3 PM followed by a memorial service at Chalybeate Springs United Methodist Church in 7592 Upper Possum Creek Rd, Gate City, VA.
