

Raymond Anthony Hughes, 88, passed away peacefully July 9, 2011 with his wife and daughter by his side, after a long illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 28, 1923 to John "Jack" Joseph Hughes and Irene Germain Brogan Hughes both of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mr. Hughes served in the US Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, he served aboard the USS Sagamore, the USS Waldron and then aboard the heavy cruiser, the USS Wichita as an Engineering Mate. When war was declared following the attack on Pearl Harbor, his ship was escorting supply ships across the North Atlantic while being chased be German subs. He proudly served in every major naval theater during WWII. Following the War he returned to New York and started working for the New York Daily News only to be reactivated at the start of the Korean War.
After the Korean War, he attended NYU and he returned to working at the New York Daily News where he worked for 33 years until his retirement. He worked as the Comptroller for the Circulation Department of the News. Ray was a life time member of the John V. Daniels, Jr., Post No, 2813 of the VFW. Ray was an avid tennis player and sports fan.. Following his retirement he lived in Derby, Ct. before moving to Holly Springs, NC in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Catherine Kennedy Laurenson Hughes; daughter, Christine Scott Hughes and husband, John Dooley of Apex, NC; son, John Andrew Hughes and wife, Joanne Dayre Hughes of Columbia, MD; grandchildren, Jessica Marie Hughes, John "Jack" Matthew Hughes and Matthew Evan Dooley.
Services will be private. He will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery
