Thomas was born on July 20, 1935 at the Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, NY to Norman Arthur Lowenstein and Onalee Estelle Lowenstein, (Tulley).
Tom was the oldest of three brothers; Thomas Lowenstein and James George Lowenstein and the youngest was Michael David Lowenstein.
In 1940 the Lowenstein family moved to Anchorage, Alaska. The boys had a carefree childhood growing up in Alaska. After Tom graduated from Anchorage High School in May of 1952, he decided to travel south to California. He attended the University of Santa Clara. Moving southeast he finished his college education in Alabama. Tom graduated from Spring Hill College in Mobile in 1958.
Later that year he obtained a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was promoted until he gained the rank of Captain, after which he ended his reserve service in 1962.
In 1965 Tom began a career in Civil Service. He began in the Bureau of Census and later transferred to the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. He worked as a computer specialist and was promoted to supervisor of his section. He retired in 1994.
In June 19, 1971 Tom wedded the love of his life, Helen Perun. The couple celebrated a Catholic marriage in Saint Matthews Cathedral in Washington, DC. They enjoyed 41 years of companionship and loving devotion to each other.
The couple produced a son, Christopher Thomas Lowenstein. Together they also raised Linda Kay Wonsock from Helen’s past marriage. Helen preceded Thomas in death on June 28, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Michael.
Thomas is survived by his brother, James George Lowenstein of Sequim, Washington and his son, Christopher Thomas Lowenstein of Phoenix, Arizona, and his stepdaughter, Linda Kay Petteway. (Steven).
He is loved and remembered by his grandsons Sean Michael Petteway (Susie Carlson) and Brandon Alan Petteway (Stephanie). His two great granddaughters, Helena and Esther Petteway have added special joy to his life.
