William Alfred "Al" Wood

William Alfred "Al" Wood, 80, passed away on Saturday morning, December 12, 2015 at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living. Born on March 27, 1935 in Chatham Co, NC; he was the son of the late William Marvin Wood and Carrie Lee Cotton Wood.

Al served honorably in the US Army and then in the National Guard. He retired from the NC Department of Transportation as a Concrete Inspector, as well as from the NC Department of Agriculture. He also enjoyed working at the State Fairgrounds in Public Safety for many years. He was a faithful member of South Hills Baptist Church, a Boy Scout Master for Troop 202 in Merry Oaks (now of Cary) and an avid RV Camper.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years: Jean Horner Wood; two daughters: Cheri and Brian Watkins and Melody and Zesely Haislip, Jr., all of Raleigh; grandchildren: Caroline Cobb, Z.B. Haislip III and Katie Kline; brother: Gene and Pat Wood, of Henderson; sister: Sue Holleman and Clyde Temple, of Holly Springs; and by other family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at South Hills Baptist Church, with Funeral Services, officiated by Pastor Brian Lowman and Pastor Gene Wood, to begin at 2:00 pm. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. Pallbearers assisting are Zesley Haislip, Jr., Brian Watkins, Kirk Baker, Ronnie Holsclaw, Jack Smith and Kevin Woodall.
