David Victor Boss was born on March 14th 1932 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He passed away at the age of 91 on May 21st, 2023 in Victorville, CA while under the care of hospice. Cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest and COPD.
Early history
He grew up in Dundalk, MD with his brother Earl William Bosse. He was raised by his mother, Elizabeth Bell Frieze and step-father William George Bosse. He loved to build model airplanes with his brother, light them on fire and throw them out of the upstairs bedroom window. Also play with balls of mercury from a broken thermometer in the basement and throw rocks at his brother during fort wars.
After skipping a grade, David graduated from Dundalk High School in 1949, when he was 17. Immediately after graduation he joined the Navy, was trained as a radarman, and went by ship overseas to Japan. In 1950, while still there, the Korean conflict began. He and his ship the USS Mount McKinley, was deployed over to Korea where they transported Marine soldiers and provided bombardment along the shorelines. He was always proud to have had General MacArthur on his ship multiple times, whenever it was used as his flagship. He had many funny Navy stories while on his ship, such as working in the galley while going through his first typhoon. He also wrote a letter of complaint directly to President Truman for extending him another year of service during the war. He even attempted to hand deliver a stack of letters from World War II that he found behind a cabinet in the mail room while decomissioning a ship.
Over the years David explored numerous professions, such as door-to-door sales, in person bill collections while dressed as Dick Tracy, vehicle repossession while being shot at, home delivery of bread and milk and mortgage loan packaging to name a few. While still in his early 30s, he moved his family to California. He was a manager in many retail stores including the Thrifty Drug chain. He spent a large amount of time in Real Estate as a broker specializing in tract home sales. He excelled in management and was placed in charge of multiple Sprouse Reitz stores, including the Barstow and Apple Valley branches.
College
He graduated with an AA degree from the Victor Valley College Respiratory program in 1981. He worked as a Respiratory Care Practitioner until his first retirement at the age of 61 in 1993, from University of California Irvine (UCI) teaching hospital. After meeting, stalking and marrying his 3rd wife, he returned to work full time. At the age of 75 in 2006, he retired a 2nd time, from Lodi Memorial Hospital in Lodi CA.
Hobbies and Relaxation
David loved adventure and always had his eye on the lookout for fun and exciting things to do. Many of his eyebrow raising exploits and escapades would get him into trouble, but never deterred him for long. He was a lover and collector of cars. Even though he did not get his driving license until age 22, he owned more than 30 new cars along with countless used. He liked his vehicles flashy and kept them immaculate, even hand waxing the paint off of one of his earlier new models. Along the way of his life’s exploration, he would relax with drawing, sketching, painting and creating his own board games. He also made Christmas gardens and toy train setups for his family. He enjoyed building projects on his various homes and the complete restoration of his 1962, 38 ft Chris Craft Constellation classic cabin cruiser. He loved to go boating in the San Joaquin Delta and San Francisco Bay areas. He spent every moment of free time on his boat and participated in Christmas boat parades which resulted in many awards. Later, he went by land and enjoyed RV camping all over the beautiful western USA, and visiting family in the various States. Also fun for him was hiking, white water rafting, shooting pool, bowling, golf, playing chess, card and board games. He enjoyed playing music with his many multiple keyed harmonicas. His favorite musicians were Roy Orbison, Righteous Brothers and John Denver.
Marriage and Family
David married first wife Mary Shirley Schmidt in 1953 and had 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls, with her. Around 1972, he married 2nd wife Shirley Jean Argo, and they had a daughter. In 1994, he married 3rd wife, Bonnie Leigh Carnwright, came out of retirement and commenced raising her 5 children, 4 girls and a boy. He put her through nursing school and together they had many exciting adventures, while enjoying nearly 29 years of marriage. Their favorite song was Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers.
