

After graduating from Brewer High School in June 1951, he joined the United States Air Force in July 1951. Gil made the Air Force his career for the next 27 years until his honorable discharge in June 1978. Gil attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the Air Force. His chosen vocation in the service was as a journalist, mostly for the “Stars and Stripes”, A military news organization providing news and information to the military community. Gil was well regarded in his field and received personal acclaim for his endeavors from high-ranking military personnel during his career.
In June of 1970, Gil married Ingeborg Horn, who became his love and life partner for the next 51 years. Gil’s career in the Air Force took him to many bases all over the world including Japan, Korea, Viet Nam, and Germany (where he met Inge) and bases stateside in Massachusetts, Alabama, Florida, and California. Gil Retired from George Air Force Base in 1978 and made Victorville his home from 1974 to 1994. He and Inge relocated to Colorado and then to Arizona but returned to the High Desert (Apple Valley) in 2005, where they felt most at home.
Gil and Inge were a very social couple and made many friends in their travels over the years. Their Shih Tzu puppies’ (Suzie I, Suzie II, Suzie III, and Suzie IV) were the loves of their lives. Gil loved dancing, telling jokes and could do a very convincing “Frank Sinatra” on karaoke nights. Another passion for Gil was his Los Angeles Dodgers. He couldn’t wait for spring training every year, knew all the players and their stats and watched every game broadcast.
Gil was predeceased by his loving wife, Inge. He is survived by his daughter, Kim Lewis of Nova Scotia, and sons Mark (Linda) Lewis from Nova Scotia and Gil M. (Kathy) Lewis from Maine.
Gil will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
