

Born in Los Angeles, the oldest child of Frank and Esther Conroy, Phil lived and went to school in San Mateo along with his four siblings. He had an early interest in horses and during his teen years worked at a nearby horse ranch. At the age of 20 he joined the U.S. Marines and served in the Korean War. He was attached to the 1st Marine Division, the oldest and most decorated division. Phil drove heavy equipment as well as serving as his Colonel’s driver. He received a letter of commendation for saving his superior’s life when their jeep was hit by another vehicle. Phil delivered supplies in the freezing weather during the famed battle of Chosin Reservoir. Following his honorable discharge he studied Animal Husbandry at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He began his career as a horse trainer working for horse ranches across the country. Phil and Geraldine (Jerry) met back east and married in New York state in 1959. They began working together with the horses. He became a trainer/driver for harness race horses. Phil and Jerry followed the racing circuit in the U.S. and Canada working as a team. They eventually settled in Apple Valley where he began his second career as a truck driver for Scott Hert of Hert Trucking. Phil, a man of integrity, loyalty and a strong work ethic was a valued employee. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Jerry; two sisters, Patricia Exum and Sheila Bulley, as well as nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Michael Conroy. Jerry paid tribute to Phil with the following quote:
“The most loving husband in the world. I couldn’t have asked for anyone better. I never wanted for anything. He was always there for me. We were there for each other. I will miss him greatly and will love him until the day I die.”

Chapel service at noon followed by graveside ceremony with full military honors.
