Robert Edward Turner, 81, was surrounded by family and friends when he went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 21, 2017, in Apple Valley, CA. He was born on May 24, 1935 in Monterey Park, California to Horace and Roberta Turner.
Rob earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degrees at the University of California at Northridge. He received his Secondary School Administration Certification at the same institution. He earned his School Administration Certification at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles. He holds a general secondary life credential. He began his career in education as a secondary teacher. He taught many subjects which include: Reading, English-Literature-Composition, Science, Industrial Arts, Mathematics, Special Class for Low Index Students, Social Studies, Special Classes for Gifted Students, and Special Education. He was a high school counselor at the George K. Porter Junior High School. He was a proud Marine who served his country in Korea.
He began his administrative career as a Registrar/Dean of Students at George K. Porter Junior High School and the John Muir Junior High School. He served at the Assistant Principal/Business and Instruction at Aragon High School in the San Mateo Union High School District. In 1976, He was appointed the Principal at Apple Valley Junior High School and he remained at that school until he retired in 1996. It was during his administration that Apple Valley Junior High School was recognized by the state superintendent as being in the top 15 percent of all California Secondary Schools (1984).
Rob Turner faithfully served the community of Apple Valley for 40 years in the following capacities:
Mayor, Mayor Pro-Tempore, & Councilman for the Town of Apple Valley
Board of Governors, St Mary’s Foundation
Member of the town of Apple Valley General Plan Development
Board member of Apple Valley Unified School District
Lifetime Member of the Apple Valley Rotary Club
Longtime member on the St. Mary Medical Center Board
Board Chair of the Victor Valley Community Services Council
Board Chair of the Family Assistance Program
Chair of the Neighbor’s United
Rob is preceded in death by his parents Horace and Roberta Turner; his brother Stevan, and sister Terri; and his son Stevan Craig. His spouse Barbara; his daughters Debbie and Kristi, his stepdaughters Sandra and Pamela, his stepsons Max and Seon, and his 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive Robert.
Friends describe him as a gentleman with a great sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at The Community Church at Jess Ranch, 11537 Apple Valley Road, Apple Valley, CA at 11:00 am on February 25, 2017.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Family Assistance Program.
