STEPHEN J. FLANNERY was born August 25, 1945 in Los Angeles, CA. He passed away at home on January 24, 2016 from melanoma cancer. He was the son of Joseph Francis Flannery and Kathleen Connaughton Flannery, both deceased.
His father and mother were both business entrepreneurs. J.F. Flannery Company was established in 1948 starting as a Catholic Goods Religious Supply Store. Steve graduated St. Eugene Elementary School and Mount Carmel High School. He wasn’t a good student until he went to college. Steve did have an aptitude for knowledge and became the “resident expert” after reading encyclopedia volumes.
He served a short period with the Navy and transferred to the Marine Corps. His friend, Danny Zuber, introduced him to his cousin, Diane Zuber. He married the love of his life on March 2, 1968. He was stationed at Twenty-nine Palms, Philadelphia, Okinawa, Kansas City MO, and lastly Barstow. Steve was in the electronics division and was involved with very large computer systems. All of his children were born while he lived in the California desert lands.
Upon the death of his mother, Steve left the Marine Corps and took over operations of Flannery Company. After the L.A. Riots and rising costs, he wanted to move the company and fondly remembered the Victor Valley/Barstow region. The family business moved to SCLA (formerly George AFB) and eventually to a warehouse in Adelanto until the business was closed in 2013.
Steve became active in the community with Rotary, Community Service Council, and the Salvation Army. He was particularly dedicated to the Angel Tree Program and even helped with the red kettles.
He is survived by his wife, three children, and four grandchildren.
A private "Honoring of Life" will be held for family and friends on February 4th. In lieu of flowers, Steve requested donations be made to the Salvation Army Victorville Chapter, 14585 La Paz Drive, Victorville CA 92395.
