Edgar Scott McDonald, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, with family by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Jeanette McDonald and son, Keith Carpenter. Edgar was born in Geneva, New York on July 29, 1920 and was known by his family and friends as "Mac." He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Edgar Scott McDonald, Jr.; daughters Laura McDonald, Kristine McDonald, and Wanda Johnson; sister, Henry Etta Hughes; grandson, Najee McDonald; niece, Dr. Lauren McDonald; and many other nieces and nephews. Along with Mac, his mother, Laura, and father, Henry raised three other children: late sister, Margaret; late identical twin bother, Edward; and his loving sister, Henry Etta.
Mac was a graduate of Howard University and while there, joined the ROTC and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. When World War II was declared, he was sent to Infantry Officers Training School to become a Commissioned U.S. Army Officer. While in the Army, Mac became a paratrooper, served in battle in Italy for over three years, and achieved the rank of Major.
He proudly served as a Buffalo Soldier in the 92nd Infantry Division. As an officer, he led and protected men in battle and was the recipient of many accommodations and medals including the Silver Star and Purple Heart. His post-war service included Army reserve and New York Army National Guard duty.
After serving 25 years in the U.S. Army, Mac retired from the military and proceeded to work for the IBM corporation as a manager and a financial analyst for 34 years. Once retired from IBM, he volunteered for several organizations including the Tarrant Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Challenge Incorporation, Children's University, and the MHMR unit at John Peter Smith Hospital. He was also a member of the Grand Boule of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
Mac's motto in life was "be the best you can be in every walk of life." He demonstrated this through his loyalty as a son, father, husband, soldier, and friend. Mac lived life to the fullest. He was friendly and gregarious, with a story to tell for any occasion, guaranteed to leave you with a smile. As a retiree and widower, Mac enjoyed volunteering, attending various social engagements, and playing golf. He shared his love of life with family and friends. Mac carried himself with dignity and a natural grace. His generosity of spirit left an indelible mark of kindness on all those he encountered. We wish him eternal peace and happiness.
