Filemon Buendia Tan went to be with the Lord on September 4, 2016, surrounded by family and friends. The memorial service will be held on September 10, 2016 at 10 am at Moore Funeralhome. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Arlington Chinese Bible Church’s Mission fund.
Filemon was born on September 19, 1926 in Lucena, Philippines to Domingo Tan and Ngo Wei, growing up alongside his siblings during WWII. He met Beng Suan Keng in 1957 while studying surgery, fell in love, and married her on January 23, 1959 in Chicago, IL. Together the two built a happy home with their five children, and developed successful practices as a general surgeon and pediatrician. But when martial law was declared in the Philippines in1977, Filemon decided to give up his established practice and move his family to the US to give his children a better life with more opportunity. And provide better opportunities he did, as his children went on to become an accomplished general surgeon, rheumatologist, pediatrician, and concert violinist.
Once settling down in Arlington, TX, Filemon rebuilt his medical practice from the ground up, practicing medicine for over 40 years as a general surgeon. After his retirement, he continued to heal others as a volunteer physician at the Mission Arlington clinic. A strong believer in Christ, Filemon was a founding member of Arlington Chinese Bible Church and a member of Fielder Church since 1977, and could be found in their pews every Sunday for as long as he was able.
He worked tirelessly his entire life, and enjoyed spending time with his loving his wife of 57 years, his children, and grandchildren.
One of his greatest sorrows was the loss of his oldest daughter in 1991, Bernadine, who he is now reunited with in the presence of the Lord. From heaven, Filemon is watching over his wife, Dr. Shirley Beng Suan Keng Tan; his siblings, Mariano Tan and wife, and Linda Tseng and husband; his children, Dr. Domingo Tan and wife, Dr. Filemon Tan Jr. and wife, Dr. Anna Nelson and husband, and Joseph Tan; and his grandchildren Leyana Tan, Gracelyn Tan Ladd
and husband, Deandra Shim and husband, Katherine Nelson, Filemon Tan III, and MichelleTan.
