Visitation: The family will receive guests 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Moore Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mission Arlington.
Hal was born to Virgil B. and Mary Jane Pettigrew on March 30, 1949, in St. Charles, Mo. In 1967, he graduated from Jesuit High School in Dallas. He married his junior high sweetheart, Mary Heather Austin, in 1969. At 19, he began his career in real estate, his passion second only to his love for family. Over a 40-plus-year career, his investments spanned the globe. It was common for Hal's many business partners to become lasting friends. He embraced the role of mentor and encouraged anyone who sought his counsel. But for him the most important role remained husband, father and grandfather. He was, above all, a family man. Beyond his own five children, many young people in need of fatherly influence were warmed and nurtured by his hearth and home -- sometimes for days, sometimes for years. The same compassion extended to the wider community, especially through his work with Mission Arlington. Hal's great and often anonymous generosity was in keeping with the quiet faith that carried him.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bernice and Orville Austin; brother, Paul; and grandnephew, William Ryan Austin.
