Born on May 15, 1927 in West Plains, Missouri, Marjorie, went to her new home in Heaven on January 1, 2022 from Wichita Falls, Texas. She was born into an agricultural family that persevered through the Great Depression. During this time, Marjorie, along with her parents, two brothers, and three sisters moved from Missouri to New Mexico.
The Lemays settled in Portales where Marjorie graduated from Portales High School. She continued her education at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma, majoring in Home Economics. Marjorie graduated in 1949. Upon graduation she began teaching at the local high school in Bethany. She married Elwood Hale in August of that same year. Three sons were born to Marjorie and Elwood, Keith in 1952, James in 1956, and Timothy in 1958. Marjorie was a diligent and loving homemaker during those years.
In 1958, Elwood accepted a position in Southern California, and the family relocated to Sylmar. Elwood and Marjorie obtained their California teaching credentials in 1961, and both taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Marjorie taught 1st Grade at Dyer Elementary School. She enjoyed teaching the beginning basics to young minds, and developed close relationships with her fellow educators. After retirement, she maintained these friendships with frequent lunches and gatherings with her fellow teachers.
One of Marjorie’s greatest joys was visiting with her siblings. After her retirement, Lemay Reunions occurred every other year, and these brought great anticipation and joy to Marjorie and her family. She also involved herself in various crafts at home and through the Women’s Ministry at Grace Community Church, where she and Elwood were members. Marjorie, in addition to supporting an active husband, loved, supported and encouraged their three sons as they grew. She spent countless hours on the wooden stands watching Keith and Jim playing baseball, and in concert halls supporting Tim in his music performances.
Everyone who knew Marjorie considered her to be graceful, loving, intelligent, with a sharp sense of humor, and the best cook and hostess in California and beyond. In 2004, growing older, but in good health, Marjorie and Elwood moved to Grapevine, Texas to be near Keith and Jim and their families. Marjorie enjoyed being near her eight grandchildren, and even the opportunity to open her home to great grandchildren for cooking together and working on craft projects with them. In 2019, Marjorie moved to an assisted care community near Jim in Wichita Falls.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Elwood in 2019, by parents John Wesley Lemay and Pansy, brothers J.W. and Herbert, sisters Violet Patterson and Mora Jane Baldwin, and great grandson Arthur Ramos. Marjorie is survived by her sons Keith, James, and Timothy, sister Marguerite Curtis, grand children Rachel Archer, Trevor Hale, Sarah Ramos, Sean Hale, Hannah Hale, Matthew Hale, Andrew Hale, and Joseph Hale, and great grand children Emma Archer, Graham Archer, Aletheia Ramos, Amelie Ramos, Jude Hale, and Gavin Ramos. A day will not go by that she will not be dearly missed by her family.
A memorial service for Marjorie will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Countryside Bible Church, 250 Countryside Ct #4317, Southlake, TX 76092.
