Nancy Johnston Banks, a forty year resident of Arlington, Texas, and most recently of Flower Mound, Texas, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the vibrant age of 72. Nancy, known to her husband as Nan, was a beloved wife, mom, nana, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved Jesus, and led a life of faith and trust in God.
Nancy was born on June 18, 1953 to Donald Neil and Phyllis Johnston in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The first of five children, Nancy lived life with creativity, spiciness, vibrancy, candor, and fullness. She loved her parents and siblings fiercely and protectively. After a brief stint in Philadelphia watching her dad play in the NBA, she and her family moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
While a freshman at Wake Forest University, Nancy met, and fell in love with, John Banks. They married in 1976. Their romance continued from North Carolina, to Portland, Oregon, and down to Bedford, Texas where Nancy and John helped raise Nancy’s youngest siblings. Nancy and John ultimately settled in Arlington with their girls.
Nancy graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing and completed her licensure to become a Registered Nurse. She had a heart to care for people, and she did it lovingly and with tenacity. She continued her career in nursing while she lived in North Carolina, Oregon, and Texas, eventually becoming the Director of Nursing at Harris Methodist in Fort Worth, serving as the Director of many units, most notably the Medical-Surgical, Intensive Care, and Neurology/Orthopedic Units. She finished her career as a Registered Nurse Practice Manager for a High Risk Maternal Fetal Medicine OBGYN Clinic in Fort Worth, working alongside her best friend, Mary Beth Walker.
Nancy led by example and strove to overcome any obstacles that were in her way. She pursued and held many interests in her beautiful life. Specifically, she enjoyed creating things with her hands. Ever the creative artist (her daughters especially enjoy the painted rocks sprinkled throughout her house), she enjoyed painting, drawing, and sketching. Nancy also enjoyed creating blankets by cross stitching (especially baby blankets); scrapbooking all her memories; book reading; keeping journals and notes on everything; and doing craft and art projects with her daughters and grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time at Rangers games with John, spending time with her cat, Beau and her pugs - Lucy, Max, Eleanor Rigby, Sgt. Pepper, and traveling with her family. Christmas and Thanksgiving were always big deals because it meant time with family (and snacks of course). She always had an ear to listen, advice to give, and an opinion to be had. She loved peach-O’s, Godiva chocolate, and unsweetened Gold Peak Iced Tea. Her favorite place was traveling with her husband to the Oregon coast, Cannon Beach specifically.
Most of all Nancy loved spending time with the people she loved. She was invested in her family and friends’ lives, and showed up for all the moments. Nancy loved being a mom to her three daughters, Katie, Sara, and Liz. She was actively involved in their lives from the very first days with love, strength, advice, care, support, and grace. This love carried over to her seven grandchildren. It is hard to imagine this life without Nancy’s smile, laugh, hugs, and love. But, there is peace in knowing she is healed and with Jesus in Heaven.
Nancy is survived by her daughters Kate (Steve) Weyrich, Sara (Patrick) Thompson, and Elizabeth (Joshua) Goertz; her grandchildren, Scarlett, Sadie and Lane Weyrich, Logan and John Thompson, and Jack and Zoe Goertz; her sisters Barbara Richardson and Kay (Ted) Meseck, and her brothers Daniel (Angela) Johnston and Scott Johnston; her brother in law Jay (Kathy) Banks and sister in law Kate (James) Culbreth. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews from New York, California, Texas, and North Carolina. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, John Banks; her parents, Donald Neil and Phyllis Johnston; her father in law and mother in law, Eugene Pendleton and Catherine Banks; her brother in law Gary Richardson; sister in law Linda Johnston; and brother in law Philip Banks.
