Time flies, Norris...you are still very missed.  

Hi. I just wanted to say thank you to all the wonderful posts - they are refreshing and a touching re mibder of what a wonderful Spirit Norris was(had/is). I miss his posts, always sharing some fun bit or introspection of life. His presence is missed. Love and hugs to all. JDW. Note: that's a photo of me w my husband, Ern, who I lost on May 6, 2020. I just saw Norris's obituary on Facebook; I am so sorry for your loss.   I will always be grateful to Norris for his incredible generosity of spirit and his willingness to help.  He was a great support for me at a critical period in my life and his willingness to give so freely of his time  - and share his experience, strength, and hope - were tremendous gifts to me and so many others.  

Hi everyone, I am Amanda; Norris’s oldest child.  My sister Tricia and I would like to start off by thanking you all for coming out today to celebrate our father's life.   

I spoke to dad about what he wanted when he was to pass away, the thing he said he wanted most was “I do not, I repeat I do not want everyone crying and sad, I want to be remembered for the good times and the laughs, no being sad and down”.  So out of respect for my dad I will do my best to get through this without crying, but I’m not going to promise anything. 

Growing up we always had music playing in the house. Dad had a great appreciation for music, classic rock to be exact.  As small kids he would sing to Tricia and I at night.  These were not your typical lullabies that others sing to children. These were great songs that included Pinball Wizard by the Who, Yellow Submarine by the Beatles and our favorite which was Little Red Ridding Hood by Sam the Sham.  It was years before Tricia, and I realized that these were not typical lullaby songs. Dad gave us a great appreciation for music but especially for classic rock. We have continued his tradition on singing these same songs to our children when they were small.  


Dad had a wicked sense of humor, that would rub off on anyone that was near him.  Growing up we lived on a cul-de-sac, on Halloween the adults would block off the street and the kids and parents would dress up play games, eat hamburgers and hotdogs. One Halloween Dad came dressed as a flasher, he walked around the Halloween party in a trench coat.  Anytime someone would take a picture with Dad he would open the coat to reveal a sheet underneath with the word flasher on it. Dad was the hit of the party that year. 

He was also a very clever man would love to give advice.  Some of his favorite advice included, 
•	If someone offers you a breath mint always take it,  
•	Never fry bacon in the nude 
and my favorite which he told my husband Craig  and my brother in law  John was…
•	Never buy a woman a gift that requires to be plugged in  
Dad was always giving Tricia and I tidbits of knowledge like that.   Dad loved to give Tricia and I random pieces of information that he would call unless information.   He would then tell us to file it under U for useless.  While we were cleaning out his files we found an actual file called useless information.  Which as you can expect was an assortment of comic strips, quotes and random pieces of information. 


Tricia and I have been remembering the good times we had with dad. One of our favorites is taking my sister and I to the neighborhood pool.  When we were young Tricia and I would put on our bathing suits and wait by the front door for Dad to get home.  Dad would not have time to take of his suit jacket before we were jumping up and down asking him to take us to the pool.  We would swim for what felt like hours every summer evening, holding onto his shoulders as he swam laps.  He taught both Tricia and I to swim at a young age, making sure that we were swimming and jumping up the high diving board by the time we were 3 and 4. That was the great thing about dad, he loved his girls.  As we both got older, married, and started our own family’s dad loved our husbands, but nothing compared to the love he had for his grandchildren. 

Andrew, Henry and Donovan could do know wrong in their Pappy’s eyes; he loved all 3 of his grandkids unconditionally.  He loved the kids so much and at times would even conspire with them.  When Andrew was about 6 years old we were out to dinner with dad.  Andrew and Pappy were whispering to each other on the side of the booth and all of a sudden Andrew blows his straw cover across the table as it lands in my drink I reprimand Andrew that we don’t do that.  I look down and a second later another straw cover comes flying over at me.  I look up at Andrew ready to chastise him and dad with a HUGE grin on his face and says…you never said I couldn’t do it then starts laughing uncontrollably.  That was one of the many things I loved about dad, his childlike playfulness and attitude. 


Dad loved to spend hours playing with his grandsons.  One-time dad was playing superhero’s with Henry when he was about 3 years old.  Dad played with Henry for what seemed like hours to a little boy and was very patient with him.  When Dad left to go home that evening, Henry gave his Pappy his favorite Spiderman figurine to stay with him so that he would have protection.  Dad kept that figurine in his office for the last 3 years and it is still there to this day.  He kept every picture, every piece of art that the boys made and hung them up for all to see.  Tricia and I use to joke that they got away with a lot more then we were ever able to and he told us of course, he loved them more, and then would crack up laughing. But he said that we would understand when we had our grandkids. Andrew, Henry and Donovan were lucky to be able to have the time that they did with their Pappy. 

Dad left behind his mother Irene, his brother Russell and his sister Vanessa.  He loved his siblings very much and was lucky enough to  see them on a regular basis.  His love and devotion for my Grandmother was endless.  He would visit with her on a daily basis, taking Grandmother shopping every Wednesday. Pre-Covid they would regularly go to the gym together, he enjoyed spending time with her taking her to doctors apt’s, out to lunch and many other errands.   He truly loved helping take care and spending time with his mother. Sometimes they would just sit and talk about what his Sunday school lesson would be that week or about the topic that was brought up in his daily AA meeting.  Dad and Grandmother truly had a special bond that cant be broken. 


Dad lived everyday for his sobriety and attended meetings once to twice a day.  This past October dad had 15 years of sobriety, and my sister and I could not have been more proud of him.  Dad was very active in AA and very much enjoyed helping people stay sober.  He would talk with Tricia and I about the importance of the meetings for him and all the nice people that he met there. Dad was also very active in his church here.  He taught Sunday school and loved to attend worship.  He enjoyed having Christmas parties (pre-covid) at his house for his Sunday school class and spending time with the people in his class. 

Dad lost one of his true loves earlier this year to an accident.  Gracie and Dad had a love that transcended time.  They were always going somewhere or doing something.  That was the great thing about dad, he was always up for an adventure.  He would tell stories about how he and Gracie would go driving and take some road because he wanted to see where it goes.  I am glad to know that dad took the road to heaven and is now with Gracie living a different kind of adventure up there.

Tricia, myself and our families are so grateful that we got to have as much time as we did with him.  I know that he is smiling down on us and wants us to know that he is in such a better place now.  Tricia will be reading a poem that dad had marked in his U file that he specifically asked to read at his service so that we all know he is where his supposed to be and not to morn his passing but remember him in a positive and happy way. 


I was so shocked to hear of Norris's passing. I hadn't heard anything from him for a while so I checked Facebook to see what he was up to now that the election was over. We met at Lake Arlington Baptist Church and I enjoyed his company and our common interest in politics. He made all the dreary political news so much lighter with the cartoons he would send me in Messenger.  I will miss his beautiful smile, his laissez-faire attitude, and his fantastic sense of humour. Rest now in peace dear Norris.

He always gave the most thoughtful gifts for Christmas, as I mentioned about the Far Side Calendar for this year.  I’m sorry there will be no more thoughtful gifts.

The last few years, Norris was very important to our family.  My mom and dad got taken in for some money by a Bernie Madoff type.  Norris through tough negotiation and research got much of the money back from the con artist.  After my dad died, Norris was a big help to my mom.  He took her on many errands, did many jobs for her, helping her to take care of her cats, taking care of her medical appointments, and just chatted with her or gave her loving hugs.  When he retired from working, he spent much of the daytime visiting with Mom, helping her to keep company.  Fortunately, Mom has my sister, Vanessa and her husband, Larry, to help fill the gap Norris left.

Norris also took pride in being a grandfather – or papi, as the grandkids called him.  Those children loved him, and he loved them, enjoying spending time with them. I’m sorry that they will not get to see him get to a grand old age.

I have been involved in political campaigning the last 20 years.  One year, Norris came out to Florida to help my cause.  I was glad that my brother and I saw eye to eye on many political beliefs.  He was never as outspoken as me, as he was much more discreet, and I think, kinder.

Just look at all the comments on the internet about Norris leaving us, and you can see how many people will miss him, what a friend he was, and how much he will be missed.  I am happy that Norris will be with his love, Gracie, who died not too many months ago.  I’m also happy that Norris will be with our Dad and grandparents.  There will be happy days in Heaven with Norris there.


I am really sad that my brother died.  For Christmas this year he gave me and my wife a daily Far Side calendar.  Candy and I get to remember a bit of Norris each morning as we tear off the previous day’s calendar.  Norris had a good sense of humor, and The Far Side sure fits him.

Norris and I shared the same bedroom until I left home for college.  Growing up, we did a lot of things together.  Little league baseball, where he was a much better athlete than me.  And in Scouting he excelled.  My mom was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and we would do our activities around the kitchen table.  Norris was welcomed to join us even though he was a year younger.  He had to wait for joining me in Boy Scouts.  We were lucky the Scout hut was across the street from our house at first, and then about half a mile down the road later. We would walk or take our bikes to Scout meetings.  Norris was a super scout, and earned Eagle, a rank that not too many kids make.  He also earned the even rarer Order of the Arrow honor, something I missed. He was a cool kid.

In high school, he was exceptionally popular.  In our school, cheer leaders were elected by the student body.  And, Norris got elected, and did a great job.  Funny thing is there were two Pattersons on the team when Norris was a cheerleader.  No relation, though Rundy lived down the street from us.  We had one of his campaign bill-boards stored in our garage for many years.  It was a painted picture of Snoopy dancing. His campaign to get elected was a family affair.

After I left home, we didn’t have too much contact except during holidays.  When I got married after I graduated from college, he and some of my friends got together and painted “Help me!” on the bottom of my shoes.  Fortunately, it snowed on my wedding day, and the snow helped wash away the words.  He also helped to decorate my car.  I was a bit stupid and didn’t understand the meaning of 1+1=3. My wife explained it to me. 


Norris and I worked at Genesis Counseling Inc.,and because of our last names, I affectionately called him "kinfolk". We were the only two in our dept, so we had a lot of  conversations about life. Norris had a wit about him that is so memorable. I found him to be one of the people you must meet in life. Family I was blessed to have known him, but you were blessed to have had him.

Norris and I had a breakfast date on Monday morning after the meeting.  I was looking forward to seeing Norris,  and very disappointed that we kept pushing the date back.

I attended high school with Norris.  I always enjoyed talking with him in the halls.  He was a great guy.

Norris was really an awesome guy—you could not hope to meet a more genuine soul. Anytime I needed an ear, or moral support, he was there without fail, and always without judgment. We were from different generations, and, at surface level one would think we had little in common, but Norris had a light, youthful soul (and though he was unapologetically sincere, he had a great sense of humor), and we learned that we actually had a lot in common in both our backgrounds and interests. One memory of Norris that sticks out was when he and I got to meet Stephen King—a writer we both LOVE (at some random high school auditorium in little ole McKinney, Texas, of all places). We were both starstruck and nervous as all get out. Norris meant a lot to myself, and many others, but what meant the most to him—what he was most grateful for—was his family. Norris talked constantly about what a proud father (and grandfather) he was, and what was going on in his daughters’ lives. Though I struggle with terrible anxiety, whenever I walked into a room and saw Norris, I felt immediately at ease. Though he was the picture of humility and would never acknowledge it, Norris just had that kind of effect on people—myself included. I’ll miss his smile, infectious laugh  relentlessly- positive attitude, and comforting presence greatly. I’m proud to have called Norris a friend, and, like so many others, I was enriched by having known him. I will forever be grateful we passed through each others’ lives on our own journeys. As he was loved dearly, he will be missed dearly. 

One our first date Norris bought me a dozen yellow roses.  We had a great friendship that spanned more than a decade.   He was gentle and kind.  I will miss him always.   

Norris was kind and warm to everyone he knew. He leaves the world a better place.

one of my favorite people in the whole world .. I met Norris 20 years ago in Houston he befriended me when I was at my lowest  without judging  ..only encouraged and supported me..we still spoke at least twice a  week   .  My life is better for him..He will be dearly missed..I will see you again one day my friend..

My dear sweet friend, fly high and grab Gracie's hand. I will never forget your kindness and your light hearted humor. You encouraged me from the day we met in Kaufman, Texas. Your friendship will always be cherished. Your work in this life is done, enjoy your new home. You will surely be missed. 

So sorry to hear of Norris’ passing.  He was a great guy and a dear friend.  He spread laughter and happiness to all he knew.   

I knew Norris from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas.  We graduated in 1971.   He was funny and friendly and kind to everyone.   I reconnected with him on FB within the last couple years but it was as tho we had been connected all these years.   Again, witty and kind.  He was supportive when he read someone was in need of support or a laugh.   It was as tho time stood still. I loved reading his posts and  felt his pain when his Gracie passed. I pray they are together again.   Rest In Peace my friend.   Thank you for the smiles and laughs you you gave to us♥️

I have known Norris since 2006.  We shared the same Birthday in our program and were quick to wish each other congratulations on our shared milestone. 
Norris was funny and witty! He was always sharing funny sayings or sending hug emoji’s.  He sent me a card each Christmas, and I will cherish the one I received just a few weeks ago.
I’m so happy I had the opportunity to meet His friend Gracie. I could tell they enjoyed each other’s company.
My condolences to your family.  Norris will be dearly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.  I will miss you Norris.

Norris was an exceptional man. He was gentle and kind, but could be fierce in his protection of those he held dear. He was fun loving ❤ and always made me laugh. I will miss him greatly in this world.  We live in different states now but would message each other.  How precious life is, how much I will miss him. 

Norris had a natural gentleness, a good natured kindness that flowed freely from his heart. He taught me to always accept a mint when offered, never fry bacon in the nude, and most importantly to be open to being wrong. You'll be missed my friend. 

My heartfelt condolences for your beloved loss. I have known Norris for many years through our journey in recovery. We even served on various committees over the years. Norris exemplified integrity and unconditional love for all. He inspired so many people. Norris was always willing to help others. He definitely has a very special spot in my heart ♥️ 

When I met my husband, Max Holland, he introduced me to 2 very special people to him and became very special to me as well, Gracie and Norris.  We went to several places with them when Max spoke and what a treat that was!  They made me feel such a part of, which I so desperately needed at that time.  They ended up being there and witnessed our wedding and that made it that more special.  We loved you Norris and will always remember that amazing man you were. Max and Carol Holland

Norris was a special and kind man. We were not that close but I remember when he was able to bring his mom to some birthday parties. That was a special effort on his part and I appreciated it.  RIP

One of the best people I have ever met. An absolute beautiful human being.  I will miss you good buddy. I am grateful for the time I got to know you.  Always smiling,  that is a gift.  Hope to see you again in the next life.  Peace brother. 

Throughout our lives we meet many new people and there are some, like Norris, who become very dear friends.  Unfortunately, there sometimes also comes a time when we must say goodbye to them because they have departed this life. The heavenly departure of a friend leaves us feeling very sorrowful ... and even confused.  We weren't ready for them to go.  We don't always understand why they had to leave.  This is how I feel about Norris being gone.  He was very dear to my heart.  He will be missed. 

Holding those around him as precious friends was a demeanor I so much appreciated being around Norris. Caring was always there before him as he welcomed folks. I'll have his smile right here with me to always be encouraged by his loving spirit. Thank you Norris.

I met Norris 13 years ago.  His first sponsor Eddie was my best friend.  Norris and I share a special day together10-14.  I found him to be a sweet and kind man.  He genuinely wanted to help people whenever he could.
I, like countless others ,will miss his smile and his gentle demeanor.  Norris was my friend!
