Patricia Anita Horne Cushman was a woman whose heart was as vast as her many accomplishments, a loving mother, grandmother, and friend who brought light and warmth to all who knew her. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on December 16, 1945, to Joseph Mathis and Pearl Anderson. Patricia’s early life was shaped by the love and care of her parents, Alphonso and Pearl Horne, who embraced the role of raising Patricia after the passing of her beloved grandmother, Minnie Louis Anthony Anderson. As the eldest of three siblings, Patricia’s love for family was deeply ingrained, alongside her sister, Alphenia and her brother, Alphonso II.
Patricia’s academic journey began at Stanton High School in Jacksonville, where she graduated in 1963 at the young age of 16. Stanton was not only the school she attended but a cornerstone of African American education in Florida. After graduation, Patricia’s pursuit of knowledge led her to Talladega College in Alabama, where she joined the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the Fall of 1964. She would continue her studies at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), where she proudly earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1967.
Her professional journey began with a chance meeting at IBM, where she met the love of her life, Danny Joe Cushman. Their shared passion for technology brought them together, leading to a contract at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. In 1971, they made the bold move to Clear Lake City, Texas, to continue their work at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. That same year, on October 23, 1971, Patricia and Danny were married in a ceremony that marked the beginning of a beautiful life together. Soon after, they welcomed their first son, Ian, followed by their daughter, Erin.
Patricia was the heart of her family—devoted to her children and always deeply involved in their lives. Whether it was helping with homework, cheering them on at sporting events, or volunteering at the PTA, Patricia made sure her children felt her love and support every step of the way. She and Danny shared countless memories with their children through family vacations, from beach houses and lake trips to skiing and camping adventures across the country.
In 2014, Patricia and Danny moved to Arlington, Texas, to be closer to their daughter, Erin, and their growing family. In this next chapter, Patricia’s joy overflowed as she became a doting grandmother to Darien, Yahria, Evan, Kyler, Peris, and Prince-Julian. Known to her grandchildren as "Meemaw," Patricia’s love and devotion to them knew no bounds. Her heart swelled with pride for her great-granddaughter, Zyonna Janae Thompson, who brought even more joy to her life.
Throughout her life, Patricia was a deeply spiritual person, always seeking growth and understanding. At the age of 60, she took the courageous step to convert to Judaism, finding a loving and welcoming community at Congregation Beth Shalom in Arlington. Patricia embraced her new faith with eagerness and devotion, and one of her proudest moments came in August 2024 when she celebrated her Bat Mitzvah ceremony, a testament to her lifelong pursuit of knowledge and connection.
Patricia’s life was a reflection of love, resilience, and an unshakeable commitment to her family and her faith. She passed away on July 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer, at Pecan Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Kennedale, Texas. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Danny Joe Cushman; her sister in-law, Beverly Jean McGehee; brother in-law Stan McGehee; her nephew Marc McGehee; her sister in-law, Carol J. Cushman; her father and mother in-law Samuel and Kathaleen Cushman; parents, Alphonso and Pearl Anderson Horne and her niece Tonya Woods Kiser.
Patricia’s memory will live on in the hearts of her son, Ian (Stephanie) Cushman, and grandchildren Evan and Kyler of New Jersey; her daughter, Erin (Percy) Bass III, and grandchildren Darien, Yahria, Peris, and Prince-Julian of Texas, as well as her great-granddaughter Zyonna; her sister, Alphenia (Michael) Shine of Florida; her brother, Alphonso (Piko) Horne II of Florida; her brother-in-law, Ron Cushman of Kansas; and an extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, Sorors, co-workers, and friends who were blessed to have shared their lives with her. And also Miss Molly who provided so much comfort, support and love to her.
Patricia’s legacy of love, grace, and perseverance will continue to touch all who knew her. Her memory is a treasure, and her spirit will live on in the countless lives she uplifted with her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.
