Dr. Philip Roos, Arlington, TX, was born in Brussels, Belgium to Maurice and Berte Roos on January 24, 1930. When he was nine and his brother, Andre, was seven, the family moved to California to escape the Hitler regime. They settled in Palo Alto, where they became naturalized citizens in April of 1946. Dr. Roos attended high school and Stanford University at the same time, earning his diploma as well as his Bachelors and Masters degrees all within eight years (with straight A’s.) He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, also with straight A’s, from the University of Texas, Austin in 1955.
Dr. Roos began his professional career as a clinical psychologist with the Veterans Administration in San Antonio, and then as a staff psychologist with the U.S Public Health Service Hospital in Fort Worth. He taught psychology classes at TCU, and served as Director of the Psychology Department at Timberlawn Hospital in Dallas. Dr. Roos later accepted positions as Chief of Clinical Psychology Services for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (MHMR) and Superintendent of the Austin State School before becoming Executive Director of the Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States. After retiring from association work, he and his wife, Dr. Susan Roos, opened a private practice to provide individual and group psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, marriage counseling, and supervision of psychotherapists. Dr. Roos’s lengthy Curriculum Vitae includes many national and state professional appointments and publications.
Aside from his professional life, Dr. Roos was a licensed pilot and flight instructor, and a lover of animals large and small. He exuded professionalism, kindness, and humor in all his relationships. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Andre, in 2022 and his wife, Susan, in 2024. Dr. Roos is survived by their daughter, Valerie, and his cat, Thomas.
