Trach Van Nguyen

Ngày xưa Ba học chưa hết cấp một đã đi làm. Từ tay trắng ba tôi tần tảo lập gia đình để nuôi 5 đứa con. Khi giải phóng, ba tôi mất tất cã về quê làm lại từ đầu. Rồi đến 1978, ba tôi bỏ tất cã để đưa 5 con đi vượt biên tìm tương lai cho con mình. Khi đến Texas, ba tôi làm cho hãng Mrs. Baird Bakery. Ba lúc nào cũng lấy thêm giờ đễ lo cho các con ăn học. Ngày xưa Ba học chưa hết cấp một. Khi ba tôi mất, con cháu về đầy đủ, có đứa là Tiến sĩ, có Y tá, có Chef, có đứa là Mục Sư, Kỷ Sư. Nhưng cái tôi học được ở ba tôi những ngày cuối đời là tình yêu thương của ba tôi ngọt ngào. Trong những cơn đao, vậy mà khi gặp vợ chồng tôi ba vẩn cười.

My father didn’t finish elementary school before he had to start working. Starting with nothing, he worked tirelessly, saved, and built a life to raise five children. After the Fall of Saigon, he lost everything and returned to farming to rebuild. In 1978, he left it all behind to escape Vietnam by boat in search of a better future for his family. We arrived in Watauga in early October 1979, and he started over yet again, working at Mrs. Baird’s Bakery. He always worked overtime to ensure we could get an education. In his final days, he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren—now grown and accomplished, with master’s degrees and careers as chefs, nurses, engineers, and even a doctoral Pastor. However, the greatest lesson I learned from my father, especially during his last moments, was the depth of his love. Despite being in tremendous pain, he still smiled when he saw us.
