

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Moore Funeral Home, where family and friends are invited to gather starting at 1:00 pm.
An army veteran and accomplished architect, Walter retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after over 40 years of service. He was a resident of Arlington since 1980.
Born in New Rochelle, New York to German immigrants in 1938, Walter spent his early childhood in war torn Germany, moving back to the states, to Greenwich, Connecticut at age 13. A graduate of Greenwich High School, he studied architecture at Pratt Institute earning a Bachelor’s degree and subsequently embarking on an exciting career working under world revered architect, I.M. Pei, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Working with the Corps of Engineers, he was stationed in Germany, where he met his wife, Sigrid, a German national who also worked for the Corps. He retired as a Major from the army but remained in the army reserves, and continued his career with the Corp of Engineers for over 40 years, first in New York, residing in Greenwich, Connecticut and then Dallas, residing in Arlington.
Walter is survived by his wife of over 49 years, Sigrid Thiem, his daughter, Claudia Thiem, son, Jeffrey Thiem and wife Jennifer Thiem, daughter, Vanessa York and husband Adam York, as well as his grandchildren Ainsley Thiem, Hagan Thiem, and Vera York.
