Auburn - Marcel “Moose” Godin, age 91, a longtime resident of Fifth St. in New Auburn, passed away Friday afternoon February 27th at The Hospice House with family at his bedside. He was born in Auburn on November 27, 1923, a son of George and Alma (Simard) Godin. He was educated in Auburn schools, graduated from Edward Little High School in 1942 and remained a lifelong resident of the Auburn community. On May 30, 1951 he married the former Therese Raymond who predeceased him in 2010. Following high school, Marcel enlisted in the Navy completing Basic Training in Newport, RI. Before he could be assigned to duty, the illness of his father brought him home to care for family. He was assigned to military work at the Naval Shipyard in South Portland building Liberty ships during WW II. Upon completion of his four year enlistment, he was Honorably Discharged. He worked many years at Aire-Tred Shoe and Clark Shoe in Auburn as he and his wife Therese raised their four children. He ended his working career at Antoine Rubber where he worked for several years until his retirement. Marcel was a lifelong parishioner of St. Louis Church. He was an avid bowler, having bowled for many years in several local candlepin leagues and enjoyed ice fishing and wood working, including building and refinishing furniture. Marcel was an avid Red Sox fan. His passion was baseball, playing on his high school team and in fact, as a young man, played shortstop as a semi-pro ballplayer for a number of years in Lewiston-Auburn. But most of all, he treasured the many good times spent with his family and friends and attending all the activities and sporting events of his grandchildren, all the while, cheering them on. He was a loving, devoted and hardworking husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.
Marcel leaves behind his four children Patti Bussiere and husband Albert of Auburn, Marc Godin, also of Auburn, Lynn Dansereau and husband Mike of Vicenza, Italy and Daniel Godin and wife Kim of Lewiston; seven grandchildren Leila Gilbert, Candace Mae Cartwright and husband Bill, Eric Palmer and wife Amanda, Cody Mercier and partner Rakel Dutkiewicz, Kate Swaby and husband Bill, Shannon Tanguay and husband Tom, and Brittany Dansereau; seven great-grandchildren Abraham and Addison Huff, Logan, Shelby and Easton Cartwright, Owen Swaby and Cameron Palmer; one sister Therese Lafontaine and husband Richard of New Auburn; one brother Louis "Bert" Godin of Lewiston and several nieces and nephews. Marcel was predeceased by his wife Therese, a grandson Jeremy, a sister Priscilla Labrie and two brothers Gerald and Roland Godin.
