

Lewiston- Oscar R. Hahnel, Jr., 90, of East Ave. died Sunday September 2, 2012 at Central Maine Medical Center , with his loving family at his side. He was born in Lewiston on June 19, 1922 the only son of the late Oscar and Elsie (Scheibner) Hahnel, Sr. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Lewiston High School class of 1940 and then went on to graduate from The University of Maine Orono in 1948 with the Class of 1944. Oscar proudly served his country in the US Army during W.W.II in the Pacific Theatre as a 1st Lieutenant and was part of the invasion force for Japan. He married his reason for living Julia Shores on May 20, 1950. He joined his father’s business, Hahnel Bros. Co. in 1948 and continued working at the family business until his passing. During his employment with Hahnel Bros. Co. in Lewiston he also assisted with the management of Bangor Roofing and Sheet Metal Company and was instrumental in the merger of the two corporations in 2005. Oscar was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, President of the Kiwanis Club, President of the Auburn YMCA, Board Member of the Boy Scouts of America Pine Tree Council, VP National Roofing Contractors Association, and North East Roofing Contractors Association where he received the Roofing Industry Clarence Carr Award and was very active in The Lewiston – Auburn University of Maine Alumni Club. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Central Maine Medical Center, and was also a director at Key Bank. Oscar was an avid Hunter and Fisherman, he enjoyed the camaraderie of his wide circle fellow sportsmen and traveled the northeast in search of the next trophy. He leaves his wife of 62 years Julia of Lewiston, four children Alan Hahnel and his wife Donna of New Gloucester, Adria Hahnel of Lewiston, Karen Hahnel and husband Jonathan Smith of Monmouth, Mark Hahnel of Lewiston, four grandchildren Augusta, Elizabeth, Jesse Hahnel and Eric Hahnel-Smith, a sister Gladyse Donsbach and husband Weldon of Bethel, CT, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Elizabeth Anne and a sister Erna Schutt.
