Auburn, ME - Timothy “Tim” S. Scammon, 74, devoted husband and father, died May 1, 2026 following a six-month period of declining health from complications of bladder cancer at his home in Auburn with his loving family, and cat Malahki at his side. Tim was born in Auburn, the first of four children born to Oscar “Ockie” and Dorothy “Dodie” Brooker Scammon. Tim is remembered for his love of playing Santa and the thrill he got from scaring neighborhood kids on Halloween. More recently, Tim enjoyed a quest to find the yummiest Whoopie pie.
Tim was drafted into the United States Army in January 1971 and did his basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. He was stationed in New Ulm, Germany, where he was assigned as a military police officer. He received the National Defense Service Medal as a Sharpshooter M-16 upon his honorable discharge in 1973. He received a Certificate of Nomination for membership in the American Legion based on honorable service in the U.S. Army.
A highlight of Tim’s work life was his employment at Hebron Academy where he spent 26 years among co-workers who felt like family to him. Tim received numerous awards and certifications in safety, environmental compliance, and facilities management, including OSHA, EPA RRP, and Maine Department of Education approvals. Tim attended many types of training for skills in sports field markings; grass-growing; recycling; pest management; energy management; fire safety; and ice-making/resurfacing; in other words, Tim pretty much knew how to do everything.
Tim was a groundskeeper at Auburn Suburban Little League’s field for about 20 years. Over the years, he served as President, Vice President, and coach for Auburn Suburban Little League Baseball. Other volunteer work included basketball coach for the Auburn Rec Dept., YMCA, and AAU. He was also a fundraiser for these organizations.
Tim was happiest when doing things with his family, including following his daughter Dana in dance and ballet, being her national cornhole tournament partner, and supporting his son Jeffrey in sports and ice fishing. He loved babysitting his furry grandbabies for Renee. Tim hosted many pool parties and Christmas gatherings, often featuring a lively gift swap game. He enjoyed driving all over the beautiful state of Maine with his wife, sometimes stepping on the gas when driving past antique shops and flea markets.
Family and friends recall time spent with Tim at his Auburn home, at work, at sports and horse racing events, chasing and crewing hot air balloons, and also at the family’s Bear Pond camp. Tim made memorable annual ice fishing trips to Moosehead Lake with family and friends. He was known for Lake Auburn ice-out date pools and car racing and football pools. Tim made the best baked stuffed lobster, having learned the process from his father.
Tim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Denise, whom he married at Bear Pond on a hot July day in 1982; daughter Dana; and son Jeffrey and partner Renee. His surviving siblings include sister Vicki (Scot) and brother Jamie (Karen). He is also survived by sisters-in-law Nancy, Karen (Tom), Lisa, and Ninette (Pete); brothers-in-law Peter (Cristina) and Tom; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents; brother Ronnie; a brother-in-law Tommy; and nephew Ryan.
The family wishes to thank the medical staff who took care of Tim’s health needs and made him comfortable over the last six months. A special thank you goes to Tim’s Andwell hospice nurse Kim who visited and comforted Tim and his family at their home over the last five weeks.
Per Tim’s wishes there will be no visiting hours. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the next time you support a favorite organization, please consider making your donation in honor of Tim. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Arrangements have been made by the Fortin & Pinette Group Cremation Services.
