Born Elizabeth Ann Slack on August 25, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, Libby was the youngest child of Hewett A. Slack (1912–1983) and Lena Irene Siler Slack (1918–2012).
Libby never met a stranger. Her laugh filled rooms, her questions kept everyone on their toes, and her camera was always ready to catch the moment. A passionate follower of Jesus Christ, she spent the better part of a lifetime digging deep into Scripture—notebooks stacked high with sermon notes, underlines, and follow-up questions that could turn a 30-minute Bible study into an hour of joyful debate. That same love of words poured out when she wrote her sweet children’s book, Oh! Little Fairy! And her love of beauty into the countless photographs she took of family, flowers, pets, and anything else that made her smile.
Libby loved music, patriotic holidays, and cheering for her favorite teams louder than anyone else in the room; oh, and sudoku puzzles (the harder the better). She passed on her faith, her love for the arts, and her unmistakable spark to all of her children and grandchildren in unique ways.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Hewett A. Slack Jr. (1938–1985) and John B. Slack (1939–2007); her sisters Margaret L. Slack Young (1941–2015) and Virginia Irene Slack Rogers (1944–2011); and her beloved granddaughter Ashley Moore (2003–2022).
Libby is survived by her children: Dean R. Moore Jr. (Sheryl), Lena C. “Katy” Moore, Russell A. Moore (Diana), and Joshua D. Lefler (Erin), along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Part of her story is experiencing an unexpected pregnancy. As a result of choosing life, she is also survived by her firstborn, Benjamin F. “Benjie” Wood Jr. (Jan)—adopted and raised in the Lord by Ben and Peggy Wood—and his four children.
Libby wanted everyone to know this: God loved her in Christ with a relentless covenant love. His grace abounded to her, and she received it by faith. And most importantly, this great gift is offered to you as well. “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” 1 John 4:10
It was her wish that, in lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Building Fund at Sovereign Grace Church of Bakersfield, the place where Libby worshiped, asked her questions, and loved her church family.
