On August 14, 2010, at 87 years old, our beloved Flora peacefully left this world and entered her eternal home in Heaven with her Lord Jesus Christ. Though we already miss her, we know she is in a wonderful place, pain free, and able to walk again – maybe even play basketball (her grandchildren named her ‘Magic’ Grandma). She is reunited with her husband of fifty years, Jack Burton Rogers, who died in 1994.
Flora was born in Harrison, Arkansas on November 17, 1922 to Lon and Maude Ables. She met her husband Jack in the 1st grade in Adair, Oklahoma and has been in love with him all these years. They married in 1944 before Jack left for Europe as an army soldier to defend our country in World War II.
Their girls were born in Enid, Oklahoma; Shirlee in 1947 and Glenda in 1950. They moved to California in 1952 and their boys were born in Taft, California; Ron in 1954 and JB in 1956. They moved to Bakersfield in 1959 where she lived the rest of her life. She served faithfully at Rexland Christian Church (now called Christ’s Church of the Valley) and Bible Study Fellowship. She worked at Memorial Hospital for 30 years as a switchboard operator, retiring at age 79.
Flora was a sacrificial and loving mother and wife. She was an amazing example of a Proverbs 31 woman - “ …her children (and grandchildren) rise up and call her Blessed” Prov. 31:28. She is survived by her daughters Shirlee Beck (Tim) of Ventura, CA, Glenda Drake (Mike) of Hume, CA, and her sons Ron Rogers (Kim) of Bakersfield, CA and JB Rogers (Jonnie) of Bakersfield, CA. She also was a proud grandmother of ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
