Greg worked for the City of Bakersfield for over twenty five years and retired in 2003. Greg also worked for McMahan’s Furniture for several years prior. He built a reputation at work for his dependability and determination.
Greg was a man of strong opinions, minimal words and even stronger presence. Though not one for sentiment, he valued hard work, structure, and discipline—qualities that shaped both his life and those around him.
Greg is survived by his wife of 54 years, Arlene Granillo Payan, who stood beside him through life’s many challenges. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Martha, Tommy, Esperanza, and Arthur and his precious granddaughter, Isabella. Greg is survived by
his sons, Greg and Mark Payan, his grandchildren, Ariane, Gabriella, Marky, Greg, Lucas and Cameron, and great grandchildren, Atlas, Michael, and Rafael who brought him endless joy and laughter. Greg also leaves behind his sisters Molly and Terry and a brother, Robert, numerous nieces and nephews, and many other family members.
Greg lived a full and generous life devoted to his family and hard work. He was steadfast, resilient and uniquely himself. He left an unforgettable mark on his family and all who knew him. His presence was constant, and his commit to those cared for never wavered. He will be deeply missed, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church located at 900 H Street, with burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Pallbearers for the services will include Greg Payan, Marky Payan, Cisco Lopez, Zachary Lopez, A.J. Granillo, and Mark K Payan.
Gregory's memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
