James Gaston McCoy Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, in Bakersfield, California. Born on July 30, 1941, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, he lived a life marked by service, devotion to family, and a deep love for music.
James proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966, continuing in the Naval Reserves until 1974. Holding the rank of Aviation Boatswain's Mate Handler Second Class (ABH2), he served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS Valley Forge. His years in the Navy were a source of great pride and shaped his lifelong commitment to discipline and duty.
In 1966, James married Jackie Lynn McCoy, whom he cherished deeply throughout their life together. Their union was one of enduring love and partnership until her passing. That same year marked another significant milestone as James began his career with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He worked diligently as a conductor until his retirement in 2001. His dedication to his work was matched only by his joy in spending time with those closest to him.
A man of many passions, James found solace and happiness in music. He loved playing his guitars and often filled his home with melodies that reflected both joy and reflection. Music was not just a hobby-it was an extension of his spirit.
Family was at the heart of James's world. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Kathleen Michele McCoy; his son James Gaston McCoy III; granddaughters Savannah Faith Faia and Shelby Lynn McLuckie; grandson Chase Michael Thomas; brothers David McCoy and Donald McCoy; and many great-grandchildren who brought him immense pride and happiness.
He now joins in rest his beloved wife Jackie Lynn McCoy; his parents James Gaston McCoy Sr. and Betty McCoy; and sisters Mary Mullin and Betty Crane.
James's legacy lives on through the memories shared by those who knew him-as a veteran, a musician, a railroad man, and above all else, a devoted family man.
May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
