Lillie passed away quietly at home in her sleep on February 20th, 2014 surrounded by her family. Although she was hampered by multiple sclerosis for much of her adult life, she refused to let that slow her down or dampen her spirit and zest for life. She was the third daughter born to Santos and Trinidad Gamez on September 29th 1929 in Bakersfield, California and a pivotal second generation member of Mexicali Restaurants. A long time member of Christ Cathedral Church, Lillie had a strong faith in God and a positive attitude no matter the circumstances. She loved to travel and was grateful for the opportunity to visit the holy land and be baptized in the rive Jordan in 1979. She was loved and admired by everyone blessed to know her. Indeed Lillie knew no strangers. She especially enjoyed family gatherings where she is fondly remembered as the enthusiastic "number caller" for holiday bingo games. (Invariably after she would energetically shout out - say "B6"- someone usually Rachel and/or Esther would respond: "what"?) Lillie also had a keen interest in fashion and never went unnoticed when she entered a room; not just because she engendered an inspiring attitude and optimistic outlook. Her ability to embrace others with a genuine heart-felt interest is an attribute for which she will always be remembered.
In passing into eternal life, Lillie joins her parents, her husband Otho George, son Ernie Martinez, sisters Ruth Gamez Crews, and Rachel Gamez. She is survived by her Daughter Irene Ramirez, Sister Esther Gamez, grandchildren, Lisa Mayhew (Mark), Michael Guerra (Jennifer), Paul Guerra (Patty), Nicole Ramirez, 6 great grandchildren, niece and nephews, Sonny Crews, Gloria Griego, Kenneth Gamez and many cousins.
The family would like to express their heartfelt love and gratitude to her care givers, Silvia Rocel, Ana Hernandez, Elizabeth Monriquez Romero, and Liz Smith who were always by her side. Also to her hospice nurse Rosin, and Nurses Aide Robin who were so important to her. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Gentiva Hospice or your favorite charity.
Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Thursday February 27th 2014 at 10:00am, followed by a private graveside service for the family. Pallbearers are: Michael Guerra, Dan Anderson, Jerry Anderson, Mark Mayhew, David Mayhew, Matthew Gutierrez, Kevin Gamez, Honorary Bearers: Paul Guerra, Sonny Crews, Kenney Gamez.
