We lost our sweet mother, grandmother, and friend today when Jesus came to take her to heaven. Though her loss will be felt deeply by her family and friends, we know she is at peace and no longer suffering. Sue was the perfect homemaker and her family was of utmost importance in her life. Sue was born in Yuma, AZ on March 21, 1930 to Ruth Elam and Thomas Hearn. She grew up during the Great Depression when her family suffered through a tragic poverty. Because of this experience, Sue never took a thing for granted and never wasted a drop of food. After living in many different homes and towns, Sue's family settled in Saugus, then Kernville, CA. There they had a lovely home and good, stable life. She and her brother enjoyed playful days together swimming in the Kern River and romping around the Joughin ranch with their cousin Bill. She then moved to Bakersfield. In 1947, Sue met the love of her life, Robert Erro, and they were married in June of 1947. Grandma was careful to point out that it would be 18 months before their first born arrived. Suzanne Erro was born in 1948, followed by Kathy Erro in 1952. They spent many years enjoying their lives in Alhambra, CA and many memories with the Erro clan. Grandma loved the big family dinners and Sunday church services. Basque traditions with lots of food, wine, singing, and dancing. They lived within 1 block of their 4 other French/Basque families. Lots of laughter, arguing, and good family times. Later, she moved to Bakersfield and bought her home on Covina St. In 1968, she was blessed with a third daughter, Ginger Christofferson. Big sisters Suzanne and Kathy were overjoyed to have this pretty, freckle-faced girl in their lives to help take care of. Over the next 50 years, Sue made this house a home for herself and her entire family. She has hosted countless events, including dinners, birthdays, anniversary parties, holidays, graduations, wedding receptions, and endless other events on Covina St. Grandma Sue was a fantastic cook and seamstress. She made many beautiful clothes including high school formals and Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. Not only could she prepare delicious roast beef and fried-chicken dinners, but she also learned how to prepare Basque and Italian dishes which everyone ate with gusto. Extended family and friends traveled many miles just for the pleasure of her wonderful dinners. Sue was kind and generous to a fault. She would offer you food and shelter if in need and not ask for anything in return. Grandma was the queen of the kitchen and we will never forget her fabulous cooking and hospitality. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob and loving mother Ruth Christian and nephews James and Joseph Hearn. She is survived by her three daughters and two sons-in-law, Suzanne Oxford (Larry Oxford), Kathy Day (David Day III), Ginger Christofferson, three grandchildren and their spouses, Jackie Lilly (Douglas Lilly), David Day IV (Jessica ), Kristy Thompson (Richard Thompson), four great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Lilly, Noah Lilly, Nicholas Lilly, and Savannah Lilly, her brother and sister-in-law, Melford Hearn (Josephine Hearn), her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward Erro (Rosemarie Erro), and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and others that loved and adored her. A special thanks to Mercy-Memorial Hospice and our two nurses, Diana Hernandez and Cyndi Ranjel. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 19, at Canyon Hills Assembly of God Church, Fireside Room, 7001 Auburn Blvd., Bakersfield.
