

Andres (Andy) Compos Mendez, born December 4, 1953 in Barstow, CA to Consuelo and Diego Mendez, went to be with our Lord on September 10, 2025 in Barstow, CA.
Andy attended local schools, graduating from John F. Kennedy High School in 1972. While in high school Andy worked at Sparkle Car Wash. After high school he went to work at Ft Irwin as a maintenance man. Eventually he went to work in the warehouse at McMahons Furniture Store. After 3 years in the warehouse he became a salesman. Andy was the top salesman in the Barstow and Victorville stores for the next 13 years and consistently a top salesman for the entire company.
After 16 years at McMahons, Andy went to work for the San Bernardino County Housing Authority for 7 years as a maintenance man. He then went to work for Nu-Way Concrete of Corbin, Kentucky working on FEMA contracts all over the United States. Finally, he spent the next 25 years as the manager of Sparkle Car Wash before retiring. Andy loved his job since he was a people person and he loved interacting with the customers.
During this time he worked extensively helping the Barstow High School Marching Band, even when he no longer had children of his own in the band. Andy also volunteered with the Boy Scouts for twenty years, supporting his three sons during their Eagle Scout campaigns, as well as helping numerous other boys.
One of Andy’s favorite things to do was playing Santa Claus in December at the Santa Claus house on the corner of Armory and Purple Sage. He talked to 1500 kids every Christmas season and said it was the best thing he ever did.
Andy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lynn Sheriff-Mendez of Barstow, sons Andy Mendez, Chris Mendez (Vanessa), Patrick Mendez,and daughter Katie Mendez (Savanah), grandson Caden Mendez, grandaughters Mikayla Singkum-Mendez, Kendall Mendez, Claudia Mendez, Celeste Mendez, and great-granddaughter, Emerie Kate Singkum-Mendez. Andy was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Dora Benavidez (Domingo). He is survived by brothers Jesse Mendez (Janus), Tom Mendez (Judy), sisters Paula Miller (Kennith), Mary Mendez, Mele Mendibles, and Connie Mendez (Mike Eagle), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Andy was also preceded in death by his step-father Joel Ortiz and survived by his step-sister Mirna Ortiz Carreon, and step-brothers Ricky Ortiz and Augie Ortiz. Also surviving is his mother-in-law Ellen Sheriff, and brothers-in-law Richard, Ralph (Michelle), and David Sheriff. He was preceded in death by brother-in-law Bob Sheriff and father-in-law Robert Sheriff.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road, Barstow, CA. Viewing will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am and services will be at 11:00. Reception to follow. The family requests that those who have RAMS shirts please wear them. Also blue and gold, or Andy’s favorite color green are good choices. Please try not to wear black.
