Judith Mae Evelyn Russell, wife of Dennis J. Russell, mother to Christine A. Russell, Stephanie M. Radford, and Matthew R. Russell, passed away at 11:30 pm on 7 May 2024 after a long battle with cancer and the effects of chemotherapy treatments and related illnesses. She passed in Loma Linda, CA surrounded by her family who loved her so dearly.
Born in Shiner, Texas to William B. Winkenwerder and Edna F. Winkenwerder. She grew up on the family’s farm and was well-versed in caring for their livestock and harvesting corn and cotton at an early age. She attended and graduated from Shiner Public High School in 1967. She moved to San Antonio, TX shortly after her graduation and completed an Associate degree. She met her husband, Dennis Russell at the age of 19. Judith and Dennis were married at the First United Methodist Church in Shiner, TX on 12 July 1969 and began their life together. During the course of her life, she lived primarily in Barstow, CA after leaving Shiner, TX. She was a loving mother and devoted member of the community - supporting many activities for them and the community, such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and the Barstow High School marching band, touching the lives of so many she came in contact with. She spent over 20 years as a Teacher’s Aide with the Barstow Unified School District, giving back to the community and doing what she loved, working with children.
Judith was well known for her unique kindness, caring, empathy, and love of her grandchildren, as well as her
passion for working as a teacher’s aide with so many other children. She will be missed by all who knew her. Judith’s family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, her kind words, her infectious laugh, and not the sadness of her passing. She loved Elvis and dancing, named her youngest after Roy Rogers, and of course, loved Shiner Bock beer!
She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren: Luna Radford, Evelyn Russell, Estella Radford, and Natalie Russell; and her sisters: Angeline Stovall and Mildred Vaclavik, and their families.
A memorial ceremony will be held at Mead Mortuary, Barstow, CA on 7 June 2024. Dennis Russell and family will receive family and friends there at 2:00 pm. A memorial ceremony will also be held in Shiner, TX and details will be published to family and friends at a later date. Flowers and memorial gifts are welcome but not necessary; my mother would have loved to have donations made in her name to desert-sanctuary.org where you can donate directly to the organization to continue to help her community.
