
Mercedes (Cordova) Sanchez died peacefully in Barstow, California on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the age of 70. Mercy is survived by her husband, Nicholas Sanchez; her children, Valerie Foster and Steven Sanchez; her son-in-law Doug Foster; her granddaughter, Madison Foster; her sisters, Arlene Terrazas and Margie Garcia, their husbands Jose Terrazas and Ron Garcia; her brother-in-law Mark “Flip” and Silvia Filipovic; her sister- and brother-in-law Pascual and Lucy Saiz; brother-in-law, Albert Urban; sister-in-law Virgie Urban; brother- and sister-in-law David and Josie Urban; sister Patricia White; and many, many nieces, nephews, their spouses, and loads of children, all of which she loved dearly. She is preceded in death by her father, Sisto Mascarena Cordova, Barstow, California; her mother, Magdalena Helen (Gomez), Barstow, California; her sister Nora Filipovic, Waldorf, Maryland; mother-in-law Lupe Villegas, Barstow, California. Mercy was born on August 29, 1947, in Belen, New Mexico. She graduated from Barstow High School in 1965. After graduation she began working as a key punch operator for the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow. Mercy had a love of books and music. She was always reading and learning new things. She was a generous, witty, dedicated, and smart individual who loved life and who was passionate about learning and sharing. She was a dedicated member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Services are scheduled for Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Rosary starting at 9:15 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., and Graveside Service at 11 a.m. at Mt. View Memorial Park, with a reception to follow at Noonan Hall. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mercy’s life. The family would like to thank the caregivers and hospital staff at Barstow Community Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit for their care and compassion towards Mercy in her final hours.
