Retired Master Sergeant Thomas A. Cullen passed away on July 23rd, 2017 with 63 years of life. He served in the U.S. Army, Calvary and National Guard and was honorably discharged with 35 years of service. Thomas received several medals and ribbons of honor for military achievement, War on Terrorism Service, National Defense Service, Army Service, Armed Forces Reserve and two medals from our 43rd President, President George W. Bush for honorable service in the Persian Gulf and Iraqi Wars. He was a resident of Barstow, California for over 55 years. Thomas Cullen graduated with honors from catechism at Mt. St. Joseph’s and attended both parochial school and John F. Kennedy High where he ran track. He quickly joined the military at the age of 18 and was sent on tours overseas including Europe. He worked his way up the military career ladder attending schools and first sergeant training while keeping the shortest running time of 2miles up to his retirement date. He was active in his community as a lifetime member of the Lions Club International and by volunteering at the Veterans Home here in Barstow. He donated to such charities as American Heart Association, The Red Cross, and the Veterans Association. He enjoyed gardening and baking with his granddaughter, Isabella, during his retirement. He was well known for making latch hook rugs and often gave them as gifts to those whom admired them. His humble spirit and legacy of hard work will be carried on by all those whom he touched by his presence. He joins his first and only love, his beloved wife of 37 years of marriage in eternal life and happiness. His two daughters, Elizabeth and Patricia, and his only granddaughter Isabella, miss him greatly but know he is now happily resting in peace next to his beloved wife.
