Mark Simandl died peacefully on February 5, 2014 at his home surrounded by family and friends. Mark was born in Newark, New Jersey and moved to California in 2007.
Mark attended Linden High School and subsequently served in the Army during Korean War, where he was stationed in Germany. He worked for several major manufacturing corporations, including Lockheed, General Electric, and Lucas Industries, where he served as Director of Quality Assurance.
Mark had a passion for aviation, holding a commercial pilot’s license and serving as a flight instructor in Somerville Airport in New Jersey. He was a member of The Quiet Birdmen and a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite, and held the position of Past Master in his lodge. He was a competitive bridge player and enjoyed football. Earlier in his life he spent time sailing, woodworking, and playing music.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Simandl; his sister Susan Permut of Yardley, PA; his daughters, Lauren Charles of Newark, DE; and Tracy Fichthorn of Reinholds, PA; his grandchildren Sarah, Lindsay, Douglas, Steven, Amanda, and Kole; his nephew Dr. Lester Permut and niece Elisa Bergman; and great grandchildren Charlotte, Amelia, Penelope, McKenna, Drew, and Jessica. He is preceded by his late wife Janet Vandermeer Simandl, mother of his daughters Lauren and Tracy.
Mark was well known for his story telling and unique sense of humor and dedication to family.
Mark will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California on February 10, 2014 at 12:30 p.m.
