Phil was born in September 1925 to Matthew and Maggie Harrington in Durango, CO. He and his younger sister Phyllis were raised in the home of their beloved grandparents, Amelia and Nels Newman.
A member of all three branches of the military, Phil was deeply patriotic and at 17 left high school to join the U.S. Navy. Then recruited into the U.S. Marines and trained as a radioman, he went on to active duty in World War II with the rank of RM3-c and was an active participant in the liberation of the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946 at the conclusion of the war and served on reserves for the United States Air Force.
Upon returning home, Phil enrolled at the University of Washington and earned his B.A. degree and finance. He did post graduate work at the University of Southern California.
Phil had a notable career in finance and banking that began at Glendale Savings & Loan. He later moved to Washington D.C. where he was a founding member of Freddie Mac. He later returned to California to serve as the President of Westmark Savings Bank in Newport Beach. In 1986 he moved to Seattle, WA where he was executive vice president of Washington Mutual. In his later years, Phil served as an expert witness to the courts and gave testimony on matters of finance.
Phil is survived by a large family whom he loved dearly: his cherished wife Betty, his four children and their spouses, thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a nephew and his two children. He is also survived by Lili, his dog, whom he loved right alongside the rest of the family.
