Born in Chicago to Arthur and Belle Romain on the cusp of the Great Depression, the picture above shows her feet planted in the Ganges River in 2012 and is emblematic of the breadth and depth of how she lived and the mix of paths she sought out and embraced as the fabric of her life. Phyllis was a fierce woman of conviction in all she believed in and brought her entire self to all she did. Whether it was leaning into the cutting edge of contemporary art, marching for Civil Rights, or embracing Yoga, mind, body, and true soul in her 70s. She challenged the norms fearlessly, but never recklessly, was famously honest sometimes with an edge, opened her home to all, and had a hug you could feel for days. She is missed here already but is dancing in the sunlight of the spirit in the celestial plane.
