Hello I am not positive, however, I have searched for an Officer Rick Reed since i was 11.  In 1974, my fugitive father, Robert Rofelty, was pulled over by an Officer Reed in the San Bernardino mountains.  My dad had previously shot and killed my Beautiful Mother and Sister in front of my brother and I on Dec. 1, 1974 on Prospero Ave outside of Glendora Ca.  Then shot at an Officer Reed Dec.19th 1974, when my father was stopped on a mountain road in San.Burnadino. I wondered if it was this Rick Reed.  I have thought Many times about Officer Reed through the years.  And have remained always Grateful that my father missed with his bullet that fateful night.  God Bless your Family! Barbara and Family,
I just learned of Rick's passing.  My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.  What a delight it was to see you guys when you came through Bridgeport.  The two of you had such a wonderful life.  I hope those memories will see you through these difficult times.  I have such good memories of Rick and they bring a smile to my face.  I will always remember him as my boss and how hard it was to call him "Rick" for the longest time.  I am so sorry for you loss Barbara.

Barbara and Family, Ray and Rick met when they were both traffic officers - Ray in San Berdoo and Rick in Running Springs - I met Rick several years later at Inland - but our impression of him was the same - a solid, honest, hard working guy with a great sense of humor. What a blessing that the two of you found one another in Bridgeport, where Rick developed a good friendship the other side of my family - Terry and Sue Padilla. His death came as a shock to all of us, but we take comfort in the memories we each have of Rick - you can't help but smile just hearing his name. He will be missed by the four of us, and you, Barbara, will be in our prayers for peace and healing. What a beautiful life you have made together and we hope the memories that you made as a couple will sustain you in the coming years until you are together again. I remember Rick when he came to East L.A. from the academy. We were both ex-L.A.S.O. and had a lot in common. Years later I worked with him again when he was captain at Riverside and I was at Santa Ana. Great guy, not many of the old time cops like him around anymore. I am very sorry.

Our memories of our golf games and the competitive domino games will remain in our hearts forever.

We send our love and prayer to Barbara and the entire family.  A wonderful friend has gone on before us, but we will meet again one day.

Rick, thank you so much for being everything that you were.  After dad died, I always felt like I still had part of him around when I was with you.  Everything from the stories you had, to being there for me like dad would have been.  The sadness of losing you is always shortened by the thought of you and dad together again, and I am SO grateful that you got to meet his grandkids so that you can tell him all about them.  My fondest memories of you will be finishing our round of golf and you somehow using the magic of handicap to show that I "won" the bet that we never actually made at the beginning of the round.

To your family, please know that he will be forever loved and remembered in this household and stories of him will be told to my children with the highest terms of endearment.

Thousands of miles together visiting this great country of ours was quite an adventure.  So many funny stories.  Working together over the years with someone that loved the work as much as I did was priceless.  Playing golf together was so much fun no matter the weather or how poorly we played.  You were always the same, a great friend.

Barb I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Rick. I will remember him for his friendship and humor at the F. B. I Academy. He truly was a special man. When I called my twin brother to tell him that my son had died, Rick cried and said, "What are WE going to do?"  I spent my entire life depending on him and getting help in every situation imaginable.  But, that one even astounded me.  I don't know what I am going to do without him. I know I am not alone in my aloneness though, I am so sorry for his family and all who loved him.

Rick made a promise years ago to a dying friend and he fulfilled that promise to its fullest until the day he died.  I am so blessed to have called Rick Reed my friend but even more blessed that he called me his friend.

Beloved cuz, you are deeply loved and greatly missed. See you down the road.

Barb, I am so sorry for you loss. I met you years ago. I had the pleasure of working with Rick for awhile at Quail Ranch. He was truly one of the good guys I was proud to know. My condolences to the entire family.

We were saddened to hear of your loss and our friend Rick's sudden death. It has been a few years since we last saw him but will always have good memories and some pretty good stories of the years we shared working together. First in the Riverside CHP office then San Bernardino and finally in the mountains. Rick was a good friend - we spent many meals and coffee breaks together.  I hope to see Rick gain when the final day of inspection comes.

What an absolute pleasure it was to have known Rick and be personally trained by him.  Rick truly knew how to live and how to bring forth the best in others.  We will always fondly remember the holiday mornings of seeing him and Barbara at the office preparing breakfast for the troops-THANK YOU!!! Rick Reed was the best CHP Commander with which I had the pleasure to work. 
I met Rick, and Barbara, when he came into the Mojave Area as the Commander. His memorable statement to me was to the effect, â€œI am not going anywhere from here. I am going to retire here.â€ Unfortunately for us, that was not to be.
Rick was not afraid to work. He would get done with his office work, get into his patrol car and go out to write tickets. He would come back into the office with a handful of tickets and a big grin on his face. This was the first Lieutenant I had ever seen do this. It was noted and favorably commented upon by the older and younger officers under his command. And we had some OLD officers! Getting them to comment favorably on anything was quite a feat! When training with him in San Bernardino, he showed the same enthusiasm and big smile with whatever he was tasked.
It was my pleasure to work for and with him.

Rick, though I only knew you a short time as a friend and neighbor, I will miss you as though I had lost a best friend.  Your kindness, generosity and sense of humor were a great comfort to a "new kid on the block."  Wish we had spent more time shooting the breeze about our tours of duty in Old Germany way back when we were just kids.

Sorry to have waited so long but when you have been such close friends with so many happy memories it just seems impossible to know where, when or what to say.  What makes it even more difficult is being so many miles away still leaves us in a state of denial.  Last time we spoke, which was not so long ago, was regarding our upcoming trip to California and how the "Ricky Handicap System" was once again going to work to his favor no matter WHAT Jim's handicap had grown to.
 There are the many vacation trips where a "slight" booboo on Rick's part forced Jim into the 20th Century, making him purchase a digital camera and give up his 35 mm forever; knowing how paranoid Jim was of heights, Rick books us on a Pink Jeep trip which climbs straight up the side of VERY LARGE BOULDERS, leaving Jim with no escape route; coercing me to go on a roller coaster ride with him (which Barb and Jim absolutely refused) and I spent the next three days so sick I couldn't eat a thing.  Speaking of eating, that will probably be some of our fondest memories.  When we would return from our sojourns, we spent more time telling everyone about the neat places we ate than some of the fantastic sights we saw.
 I suppose we could go on and on and on about the quiet times we spent just the four of us, the times we spent with each others families, the hundreds of golf games and tournaments, and just how empty that very, very special place in our heart Ricky filled, but I'm sure there are many others with those same empty places.
 You know how we feel, Barb.  Ain't no words, kiddo.  We love you.

We only hung out for a short while, but have very fond memories of golf, golf shows and going to see the model of your house in Beaumont before it was built. I remember zooming down Florida Ave. in Rick's RED car and you introduced me to Tiramisu. I remember being amazed at Rick's collection of wolf paintings. I will never forget the day you came to our house in Hemet after the shoe bomber "Rick Reid" was captured; and Frank saying to Rick "take off your shoes before you come in our house!" We had a good laugh over that one! I can only say how very sorry I am. Sending love and prayers your way, Diana

We have many wonderful memories of Rick during his time in the Arrowhead Area, we will miss him.  Our thoughts and prayers go to his family.

We are deeply saddened over the loss of Rick. Although we only met a short while ago while wintering at Sun Lakes, we were truly happy and thankful  for your gracious hospitality and friendship, and were so looking forward to reconnecting on our next visit to California.

You were the best Godfather I could have ever asked for. Thank you for always being there for my family and I. You will always be in my heart and I will never forget what an amazing man you were. I remember a story from the last date you took me on and you told me the story about you,  my dad and the Goldwing Motorcycles. You said the two of you had a promise to one another that if either of you won the lottery, then the winner would buy 2 Goldwings so you guys could ride together. It makes me smile now knowing that the two of you are up and heaven finally getting to ride your dream motorcycles side by side. Thank You Rick for all the amazing memories. We promise to watch over your beautiful family the way you all watched over ours.

To the Family of Rick,
Unfortunately I only knew Rick as a child when we made our yearly trek to LA by train to visit our cousins. I have so many great memories of those times. As adults, the years and the miles have separated us and I am so sorry for that. I have loved looking at the guest book pictures, though, and I see a man who loved his family and loved his life.  How precious those memories will be for all the children and grandchildren and Barbara. And how excited his Mom, my sweet Aunt Ginny must have been to see Rick again!
For those of us still here, we can look forward to that time when there will be no more tears and no more good-byes! God has good plans for us!

Rick was a smart and fair CHP seargent when he worked with Carl in Running Springs.  He was also a good friend who helped us roof our house in R.S.in 9 degree weather!  We remember fun M/C trips and get togethers with Rick and his second wife Terry.  We don't really know you, Barbara,but we want to express our aympathy and love in this time of your grief. A great memory of Rick is when we where at the river boating and Rick jumped from the rock into the water.All the kids where afraid to jump from that heigth and we heard them say did you see that guy jump.

Barbara, my "minds eye" wants to capture every moment I saw Rick at the year end club rally.  Barbara, Doug, Jasmine and Angelina, one vivid memory of last weekend was of all the smiles and happiness I saw on  your faces, enjoying your time together.  Rick was always so happy when he was with his kids and grandkids.  We will miss him too.

Barbara; We are so sad to hear of Rick's passing. Having Rick as a roommate at the FBINA is one of my fondest memories of that time. Rick and Barbara came into our lives only three years ago having been introduced by mutual friends Todd and Lori.
