Robert Max Short (“Bob”) was born on March 5, 1937 in Erie, PA. He was the first of two sons born to Max and Berdena Short. For the first six years of his life Bob lived in a trailer on various farms in the Erie vicinity. Then, until the age of 16, his family lived on their own farm outside Ripley, New York. Bob spent many happy days at the top of the maple tree in their front yard – looking north across Lake Erie and watching the ships steam past in the shipping lanes in the middle of the lake and looking south to watch the coal burning trains pass by. When not climbing the tree, Bob was weeding, hoeing, plowing, and doing all the other farm chores that were assigned by his dad. The work Bob disliked most was going into the hay loft after dark to thrown down feed for the animals in the basement barn. The noise of the owls, mice, bats (and who knows what else) made him get through that job as quickly as possible.
Bob was saved at Foursquare Church in Ripley, New York on March 10, 1946 at the age of 9 (during the A.M. service – the message was preached by the Pastor’s wife, Sister Darnell) when he was invited to attend with a neighboring family. His parents and family were saved and started following Christ by reading literature that Bob would bring home from church. Bob was baptized in the frigid water of Lake Erie.
Bob’s family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico; then to Roswell, New Mexico; then to the Phoenix, Arizona area, where he graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1955. Bob then attended Arizona State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1960. He continued his graduate studies at ASU and received a Master of Arts Degree in Education in 1962.
Bob was a teacher for about 40 years. He taught business education at the high school level in San Manuel, Arizona and Bloomington, California; and at the Jr. College level in San Bernardino, California. He also taught at Slover Mountain Continuation High School in Colton, California for a number of years. Bob switched to administration, and was the Work Experience Director for the Bloomington/Colton School District until his retirement in 2000. Bob was inspired by a business education teacher in high school, and first thought that he may like to pursue business law. But he switched his focus to business education, and went on to inspire many students of his own throughout his teaching career.
Bob met Delores through a church friend, and they were married on August 20, 1960 in Buffalo, Wyoming. Three children were born to this union: Paul, Keith and Carl. Bob and Delores lived in San Manuel, Arizona; Rialto, California and Calimesa, California. Bob took great care of Delores and he gently encouraged high expectations from his children. Bob and Delores enjoyed a beautiful celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary in August 2010.
Bob enjoyed wood-working, he especially liked making improvements around the house, i.e. building shelves, cupboards, etc. He liked to sing, play and listen to music, especially Southern Gospel. He was known for being very organized and meticulous.
Bob was very involved in church life (he loved serving his Lord). Bob served in a lot of different ministries during his years at Riverside Calvary Temple (now LifeSpring), San Bernardino First Church and Beaumont First Assembly of God. Bob has sung in choirs, sung solos, sung in quartets, led worship hymns, played his keyboard, served as Men’s Director and Christian Education Director (just to name a few of the areas of his ministry involvement).
Bob survived a battle with prostate cancer in 2001. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2010, and fought a brave and valiant fight of faith. God has granted many blessings to Bob and Delores over their lifetimes, and especially over this past year-and-a-half. Bob passed away at his home on January 25, 2011, with his wife of 50 years, Delores, by his side. The moment his spirit left his body, he was received into his eternal home in heaven that God had been preparing for him since his conversion on March 10, 1946.
Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Delores; his three sons and their wives: Paul and Kathy of Stockton, New Jersey, Keith and Julie of Beaumont, California and Carl and Candace of Yucaipa, California; his eight grandchildren: Chris of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Matt of Boulder, Colorado, D.J. of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Christian of Beaumont, California, Cameron of Beaumont, California, Jordan of Yucaipa, California, Caleb of Beaumont, California and Hunter of Yucaipa, California; his brother and his wife, Dave and Peggy of Prescott, Arizona and his brother-in-law and his wife, Gene and June of Hemet, California; and a host of other relatives and friends. Bob loved his family very much and was extremely proud of each one of them.
