Mrs. Iona M Bowers

Iona was born May 30th, 1943, in Beckley, WV. She was the daughter of the late John Edward and Effie Elizabeth (Wright) Kincaid. Iona had a passion for cats, kittens, dogs and puppies, so much so that she founded the Raleigh County Animal Rescue (RCAR) in 2003 and presided over the organization as president. Along with best friends Patty Mertz (Board of Directors) and Mary Moye (Secretary Treasurer) the organization funded and assisted in the spaying, neutering, and the adoptions of over 17,000 animals, ensuring each a better life. She had a tremendous amount of love in her life granting her time to spend with her husband, children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers—Roy, Eugene, Elijiah, and Johnny Ray Kincaid; and sisters—Slyvia Cook and Juanita Sweeney.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories her loving husband of 61 years, Thomas Edward Bowers Sr. She was a loving mother to her daughter Tammy Lynn (Kevin) Carter and her son Thomas Edward (Lisa) Bowers Jr.; and a loving and devoted Mamaw to four wonderful grandchildren—Jayson Thomas Lilly, Justin Glynn (Jonie) Lilly, Dr. Brookelyn Nicole Bowers, and Thomas “Trey” Edward Bowers III. She also leaves behind a whole host of extended family, numerous friends, and will be sadly missed by all.

The family would like to express their appreciation to her niece Sherry Lynn Bolen for the countless caregiving hours she selflessly devoted to Iona’s care up to the last hours of her life. We also express our gratitude to the home hospice nurses and staff who came to her home during her final days.

Iona was of the Christian Faith and a lifelong member of the Mabscott Holiness Church under Reverend Ernest “Buzzie” Keller. In keeping with her faith, Brother Eddie Tucker will officiate her services at Blue Ridge Funeral Home at 1 pm on Thursday July 31st, with visitation to occur an hour prior. Burial to follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends and family will serve as pall bearers.
