With profound sadness we announce the passing of Joann Sturgill, a loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on Sunday, October 13, 2019. She left us while sleeping peacefully at her home in Coal City, surrounded by her children. She was 87 years old.

Born in Indian Mills, WV (Summers County), she witnessed amazing changes to her world, having lived during World War II and working in Beckley at the Pincrest Hospital and in Oak Hill at the Oak Hill Hospital.

In 1949 she married the love of her life, Lawrence W. Sturgill who served in World War II in the Philippines. Together they served the Lord for over 40 years and were members of the Stotesbury Community Church for 20 years.

Joann was the beloved mother of David Sturgill and wife, Vicky of Beckley, Jeanette Cook of Oak hill, Harold Sturgill and companion, Susie Green of Coal City, and Terrie Rubeck and husband, Chad of Oak Hill. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her step-brother, Charles of Oak Hill.

In addition to her parents, Charles Biggs and Anna Kirk Biggs, she was preceded in death by her step-sisters, Genevieve and Virginia; and step-brothers, Stanley and Earl.

Joann lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker and health care worker during the 1940’s and the 1950’s. She loved to cook, she kept an immaculate house, and was highly skilled at cake decorating and making floral arrangements for any occasion. She also loved to sew and spent countless hours with Marcella Worrell and Edith Bell making quilts for loved ones.

Joann enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were always stopping by just to visit. Most of all, she loved her family and instilled in her children values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, October 16th and from 1:00-2:00 pm, Thursday, October 17th at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 17th in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor David Wilson officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Tower Garden of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Online condolences may be made to the family at www.blueridgefuneralhome.com. Blue Ridge Funeral home & Crematorium has the honor of serving the family.

Mom you are the best! You pushed me to be better than I ever thought I could be and believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. My life has forever changed! I can honestly say I was blessed to be loved by you and daddy. All I have now are pictures and memories and I pray I can be half the mother you were. Thank you mom for everything and I will meet you and daddy on the other side! My heart will forever have a void and I am forever changed! I love you mommy!

MawMaw, you were the best of the best. We couldn’t ask for better grandparents than you and pawpaw. We will forever cherish all of our many memories with you. You have now received your ultimate reward and are in the presence of GOD, rejoicing and walkin streets of gold for eternity. Save a place for us MawMaw, and watch over us all. I love you Always, Always!!

Mawmaw, this day is going to be so hard. It’s raining and gloomy outside. The weather fits in with how we are all feeling inside. We know you are in Heaven with God and Pawpaw. I can only imagine the celebration that has been going on there since you left us Sunday. I have so many precious memories of you and Pawpaw that I will hold close to my heart and cherish always. I am blessed that 46+ years ago I came into the world and made you a MawMaw, a title you held like a true BOSS! You disciplined us when we needed it but you loved us, hugged us, kissed us and always comforted us when we needed it most. You taught me the true definition of unconditional love. Even when we did things that you did not agree with you loved us. When we did things that you were ashamed of you loved us and would dare anyone else to say something about one of your kids or grandkids. I pray that one day I can be half the Mawmaw that you are. I will miss you until the day I die and I will see you again. Until then please watch over us and keep us all safe. I love you Mawmaw and I’m Blessed to be your granddaughter.

My Aunt Joann was kind and sassy at the same time😊 She was a mainstay at the annual Sturgill reunion. She always put a smile on my face when speaking with her. Joann and Jeannette came to visit Mom (Mary Lou) this summer and I we all had lunch together, she still made me giggle☺
She is now in a better place with my Uncle Lawence..
My thoughts and prayers are with you guys❤❤
