Mary Vonetta Conner

Vonetta Conner of Stanaford, age 100, was called to heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 18, 2014 after a century on this earth to join those who have gone before her. Born April 2, 1914 at Meadow Creek, WV, the fifth of nine children born to the late Horace G. McDaniel and Bicie Rehama McDaniel. She was wed to the late Dale Conner for 50 years. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sons—Carl (Bobby) Conner, Glen Conner and Thomas Conner; two granddaughters, Pam Conner and Dale Bibb; brothers Henry McDaniel, Thomas McDaniel, Wheelar McDaniel; sisters Kayula Gwinn, Beulah Bennett, Pauline Lively, Iva Smith and Irene Murphy. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, daughter Phyllis Voultsides and husband George of Bishopville, MD and son Jimmy Conner and wife Helen of Goose Creek, SC; also 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Conner was a hard working little Irish lady, having worked at the Pinecrest Laundry for 25 years. She was a member of Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church and one of their oldest members. She was a very loving Mother and Grandmother and touched the hearts of all that knew her. She believed fiercely in her family. She loved to cook for her family, friends and neighbors and cherished holding the annual family reunion with her immediate family and large extended family at her home each Labor Day. A celebration of her life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2014 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley with Pastor Wood officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Garden. Friends may call on the family from 6 pm until 9 pm Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley. Pallbearers will be grandsons Larry Harvey, Jim Conner, Bobby Conner and Tom Conner. The family wants to thank her care givers Loma, Brenda and Tammy for the excellent care they gave her to make it possible for her to stay in her home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Vonetta’s name to the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church.
