

Millard Lee Powers, 86 of Sophia, went home to be with his Lord & Savior, Thursday, January 28, 2016 following a short illness. He was the son of the late Lonnie McKinley Powers and Alice McKinney Powers. He was born August 8, 1929 in Red Star, West Virginia. Mr. Powers was a member of the UMWA and Sophia Freewill Baptist Church. He was a former choir member, deacon, Sunday school superintendent and he sang in a quartet at Sophia Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. In addition to his parents, those preceding him in death are his wife, Jean Cook Powers; half-brothers, Claude, Clyde and Hayden Gadd. Those left to cherish his memory are son, Kenny Powers and wife Jeannie of Marietta, GA; daughter, Dianna Whittaker and husband Jim of Cary, NC; brother, Robert Powers of Crab Orchard; sister, Wanda Shelton of Sophia; three grandchildren, Roger Romage and wife Cheryl, Laura Whittaker Lumsden and husband Bobby and Andy Whittaker and wife Vicki; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Caleb, and James Lumsden, Ethan and Emma Whittaker, and Heather Romage; two God children of Kenny Powers, Paymon and Parsa Abedi; special friends, Alan Profitt, Danny and Patty Donell; brother-in-law, Larry Cook. Friends may gather with the family, Monday, February 1, 2016 from 10-11am at Sophia Freewill Baptist Church. Services will be held Monday, February 1, 2016, 11am at the church with Pastor Robert Carter and Rev. Jim Whittaker officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with family and friends to serve as pallbearers.
