Odessie Ruth Long

Mrs. Odessie Ruth Long, age 95, of Oak Hill, WV, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021 at Raleigh General Hospital. Born on April 16, 1925 in Artie, WV, she was the daughter of the late James Workman and Belvie Collins Workman.

Odessie was a woman who truly loved the Lord and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill. She was a very welcoming woman who was considered by many an “Angel on Earth” and who had a “heart of gold.” She never met a stranger and when one would come into her home, one could not leave without eating. Odessie had a smile that would melt one’s heart.

She had a love and passion for traveling with her family and enjoyed playing BINGO at the Senior Center in Oak Hill. Odessie was very strong willed and lived her life to the fullest. Her grandchildren were her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 55 years, Kenneth Long; her son, Tommy Long; her siblings, Janet Burgess, Lillian Milam, Matti Hodge, Lena Treece, Robert Workman, Dillard Workman, Claude Workman, Donny Workman and Ray Workman; her daughter-in-law, Lorena Jean Long; and her sons-in-law, Michael Berry, Sonny Bentley and Gary Berner.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Joyce Berry, Ann Bentley and Brenda Berner; her sons, Kenneth Long, Jr. and his wife, Edith, Steve Long and his wife, Tracy, and James Long and his wife, Toni; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm top 2:00 pm, Friday, January 29, 2021 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow the services in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

The funeral services of Mrs. Long will be held via Facebook Live beginning at 1:50 pm on Blue Ridge Funeral Home & Memorial Garden’s Facebook page.

In accordance with the current CDC guidelines, the family and the staff of Blue Ridge Funeral Home ask that those who attend the services wear proper facial coverings and practice social distancing at all times.

Honoring Mrs. Long as pallbearers will be Jason Berner, David Bentley, Nicki Long, Brandon Long, Steven D. Long, Jr., Scot Berry, Rich Lyon and Zack Lyon.
