

John Joseph Michael, Jr. "Joe", age 90, of Fallston, Maryland passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on May 11, 2025. Joe was born on June 29, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late John J. Michael, Sr. and Margaret Christine Michael (nee Finnerty). Joe grew up in Highlandtown where he attended The Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School. He then attended Calvert Hall College High School, where he played Varsity soccer all four years. One of his proudest moments from his Calvert Hall days was winning the State Championship and having an undefeated record in the 1951-1952 season, his senior year. He then attended The University of Baltimore and played on their soccer team as well. He was drafted into The United States Army during the Korean War and was selected to be a Cryptographer and was stationed at Camp Zama in Japan. While in Japan, Joe was invited to play soccer for The Yokohama Country and Athletic Club, where he played left wing. Before being deployed for active duty, he met and fell in love with his beloved wife, the late Margaret Virginia Michael (nee Quigley) of Locust Point. She was the love of his life. They married in 1956 and had six beautiful children. He and Margaret raised their children in the Cedonia/Gardenville area. His love shone bright for his wife and children. Joe was a family man who worked for the State of Maryland in the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation as a Bank Examiner for forty-four years. Joe also worked multiple part-time jobs to provide for his family and for their Catholic School educations. Joe was a gregarious soul, always ready to tell a story and share a laugh. He loved both playing and coaching soccer and was a member of the Maryland Soccer Legends. He enjoyed watching and sharing his collection of movies with others, especially The Wizard of Oz.
He is survived by his children; Deborah Gough (John), Mary Jo Holloran (Timothy), Joseph Michael (Margie), Margaret-Mary Beyer (Scott), Timothy Michael (Sarah), he is predeceased by his beloved daughter Maureen Michael; loving grandfather of Erin Mancha (Daniel), Caitlin Gough (Paul Donhauser), Meaghan Lederer (Michael), Sean Holloran, Kyle Holloran (Elyse), Kevin Holloran (Cathleen), Maura Holloran, Amanda Michael (Randi Petersen), Michelle Michael (Brian Longdo), Luke, Grace, and Maeve Beyer, Brendan and Reagan Michael; loving great-grandfather to Peter Mancha, Jack and Charlie Lederer, Teddy, Cecelia, and Bryn Holloran, Charlie and Adalena Petersen; dear brother of Gerard E. (Alice) Michael and Clyde P. (Elizabeth) Michael. Cherished friend of Nerry Mitchell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other close family and friends.
A visitation for John will be held Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Schimunek Funeral Home of Bel Air, Inc., 610 W MacPhail Rd, Bel Air, MD 21014. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 23, 2025 at Saint Mark Roman Catholic Church, 2407 Laurel Brook Rd, Fallston, MD 21047. The committal service will be at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, 7401 German Hill Rd, Dundalk, MD 21222.
