Larry and I grew up together on Cheney Road in Woodstown, NJ. I was so young when I met him that I don’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t know him. He was truly like a brother to me. In fact, I confided more in him than my actual brother because he was so easy and trustworthy. In school, Larry was seen as so handsome and popular, but to me he was just my buddy and best friend. After graduation, we lost touch when he went off to Morgan State and I went off to Rutgers, but whenever I returned home for the odd funeral or gathering, we would instantly reconnect. I ache to know that he is gone, but I am comforted by knowing that he was truly loved by his beautiful wife and children, it was so obvious to anyone seeing them together.RIP, my friend until we meet again.

My dearest friend Carolyn. Oh how I know your pain oh too well.
My first memory of Larry is when I returned home from Germany in time to attend your wedding. He was all smiles seeing you so beautiful. He was and still is the love of your life. You introduced me and he welcomed me into his circle enough to take on being the Godfather of Nichole as you were already her Godmother. You are such a wonderful couple and a better friend. I love you Carolyn and I and your Eastern High ladies will be here for you and the family. My heartfelt sympathy to you, but things will ease up in time, but take your time. Love Michele

As a very young man growing up on “ Cheney rd”, I was fortunate to have many positive role models. Larry was near the top of that list. I idolized his confidence and athletic ability. I fondly remember catching football passes from him and learning to field a baseball. I felt special when he allowed me to help him move his belongings to Maryland as he started the most important new chapter of his life. My family and I wish as much comfort as possible in their time of grief and celebration.

Wayde and I were so sorry to hear about your loss. We hadn't been in touch with Larry for a long time. When we were children we would see each other doing the summers when the families would get together at our grandmothers home. We (Shirley, Johnny, Albert, Larry, my brother Bobby and myself had such a good time. We all grew up and lost touch with each other. I know he will be missed. I will always remember that beautiful smile. May you all be blessed and know we are thinking about you all. We send our love.

My fondest memory of Uncle Larry is when Uncle Larry, Uncle Johnnie, Aunt Carolyn, Uncle Albert basically the whole family came down to Texas for brother/sister weekend. One morning my mom (Shirley Hawkins) his sister, was preparing breakfast and I asked her a question and she responded. My Uncle Larry immediately said to me "Baby, you gonna let your mother talk to you like that?" I said "Huh what do you mean?" He said "Your mom just called you a dummy. You gonna let her talk to you like that?" Immediately my brain began to work and I realized that my mother had responded to me like that my whole life. I never knew she was calling me a dummy and I was 30 years old.
It was moments like this when Uncle Larry's realness (in telling me that I was being called a dummy and was dumb for not knowing that) but also his compassion (for calling me baby before he also told me that I was dumb) was something that I had missed all my life. When I talk to people and tell them the truth it hurts their feelings. But when he talks to people and tells them the truth they have no idea what he said should hurt their feelings because he was everyone's friend.
